Melbourne First-Up For Rock Diva
Meanwhile, Auckland Cup winner Rock Diva (Lucky Unicorn-Bohemian Blues, by Blues Traveller) may head straight to Melbourne to open her spring preparation, reports NZ Racing Desk. "We're working through the various options as she's very weather dependent, she doesn't like bad ground," trainer Tony Pike said. "There's every possibility she will go straight over there." He added: "It will be difficult to place her into the Melbourne Cup with her rating so we'll have to try and win one of the exemption races on the way through." Rock Diva proved a match for the best fillies last term with her victory in the Gr3 Sunline Vase and third placing in the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks. She then crossed the Tasman and finished fourth in both the Gr1 Queensland Oaks and the Gr1 Queensland Derby. The daughter of Lucky Unicorn returned this season and placed in the Gr2 Avondale Gold Cup before she successfully stepped up to 3200 metres at Ellerslie in March to claim top honours in the Gr1 Auckland Cup. "She's been back in work for a couple of months," Pike said. "She's done the base work and she'll have a bit more pressure put on her in the next month." He added: "The only question mark on her is how she comes up in the spring, her best form has been in the autumn." From the Blues Traveller (IRE) mare Bohemian Blues, Rock Diva is a half-sister to Australian Guineas & Australian Derby winner Shamrocker (O'Reilly), and Gr2 The Roses winner Bohemian Lily (O'Reilly).
