Highland Reel Wins Gr3 Gordon Stakes

Thursday, 30th July 2015

At Glorious Goodwood in the UK overnight, former Coolmore shuttler and triple Gr1-winning champion European sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a Group success when 3YO Irish-bred colt Highland Reel (Galileo-Hveger, by Danehill) scored by 1.5-lengths for trainer Aidan O'Brien in the Gr3 Gordon Stakes (12 furlongs) for 3YOs, over 3YO Irish-bred gelding Scottish (Teofilo-Zeiting, by Zieten) & fellow 3YO Irish-bred colt Disegno (Fastnet Rock-Seven Magicians, by Silver Hawk). This was the first win for Highland Reel since landing last year's Gr2 Vintage Stakes at the very same meeting and took his record to 3 wins (including the Gr2 Vintage Stakes) and 2 placings (including the Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club) from 7 starts for €374,678 earnings. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said he would now consider the Irish St Leger as Highland Reel's next assignment. "He ran in the French Derby and Joseph thought he would stay, then he disappointed in the Irish Derby so we were a little bit worried, we didn't really know what to expect," O'Brien told Sky Sports. "I thought looking at him there that maybe he was running a little bit on empty at the end, but Joseph felt that he wasn't stopping, so obviously what you are looking at and what he felt may be two different things." He added: "I suppose we'll have to leave it (Leger) open, the lads will talk and decide what they want to do, but he looks like he's definitely getting a mile and a half so you'd have to be very happy with him." By Coolmore's champion sire Galileo, Highland Reel is out of the Gr1-placed Australian mare Hveger (Danehill), a full-sister to multiple Gr1 winner Elvstroem and a half-sister to fellow multiple Gr1 scorer Haradasun from Australian Oaks heroine Circles Of Gold. This is also the family of sub-fertile but brilliant young sire Starspangledbanner and Golden Slipper winner Polar Success.
