Friday Odd-Spot: Jockey Shoots Trainer
Police in the US state of Delaware are investigating a shooting that took place in the stable area of the Delaware Park racetrack on Wednesday morning, reports the Paulick Report. The shooting victim is believed to be trainer Saul Matos, who was transported to nearby Christiana Hospital after suffering a non-life-threatening wound to a lower extremity. Police have charged 30YO jockey Ruben Rojas Rojas with assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a stolen firearm. The shooting was a result of a dispute over a woman, according to reports. Rojas is believed to have tossed the gun used in the shooting into a nearby creek before fleeing. "(The suspect) fled in a vehicle which he had arrived in and he then fled from the area and, in the process, it was learned he had tossed a weapon that we believed was involved in the shooting out the window of the car and into a creek that runs through Delaware Park property," Delaware State Trooper Jeffrey Hale told WPVI television in Philadelphia. Rojas was apprehended by police shortly thereafter and taken into custody without further incident.
