Vale Tom Dawson

Friday, 31st July 2015

Queensland Hall of Fame trainer Tom Dawson has died at the age of 98, reports Sky Racing. Dawson, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year, was a talented jockey in the 1930s and 1940s before taking out his training licence in the 1950s. His best horses were outstanding sprinter Charlton Boy, winner of the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 in 1974, and prolific winner Ima Shadow, who won nine stakes races and was also Gr1-placed in the 1976 Stradbroke Handicap. Dawson's long-time friend, Brisbane Race Club racing manager Bart Sinclair, said Dawson had been in good spirits when he saw him recently. "But apparently he had a fall and went downhill," Sinclair said. "Tom should be remembered as one of the best horsemen produced in Queensland."
