Criterion Top Weight For Sydney Cup
A total of 82 nominations have been weighted for the 151st running of the $2 million Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) to be run on Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 9 April. Included in the nominations are nine horses from last year's Melbourne Cup; 3rd – Criterion (NZ), 6th – Gust of Wind (NZ), 7th – Excess Knowledge (GB), 10th – Our Ivanhowe (Ger), 11th – Who Shot Thebarman (NZ), 15th – Hartnell (GB), 18th – Almoonqith (USA), 20th – Preferment (NZ) and 21st – Grand Marshal (GB). Criterion is this year's top weight with 58.5kg on a 50kg limit (49kg for 3YOs). Three of his last four starts have been very impressive with a win in the Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) followed by 2nd and 3rd placings respectively in the Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Gr 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m). The weight allocated represents a 1kg increase on the 57.5kg he carried in the Melbourne Cup. Next in the order of weights is last year's Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan who has been handicapped at 58kg, while 2015 winner Grand Marshal (GB) has been given 54kg which represents a 2kg increase on last year.
