Nyquist Arrives At Pimlico

Wednesday, 11th May 2016

Kentucky Derby hero Nyquist arrived at Pimlico racecourse in Baltimore on Monday to begin preparations for the second leg of the US Triple Crown, the US$1.5 million Gr1 Preakness Stakes (9.5 furlongs) on 21 May, reports Blood Horse. The son of Uncle Mo will call stall 24 of the second stakes barn at Pimlico home for the next two weeks - the stall traditionally reserved for the Derby winner. Jack Sisterson, assistant to trainer Doug O’Neill, reported that Nyquist had coped with the trip well. “The beauty about Nyquist is he’s mentally so prepared for anything you put in front of him," Sisterson said. “He’ll walk the next couple days and then get back to the track jogging like we’ve done his whole career. He’ll jog one day and gallop the next.” Sisterson said it is unlikely Nyquist will have a workout before the Preakness. "I don’t think we’ll work Nyquist. Just keep him happy. There’s not much we can do in two weeks. I think his record speaks for itself. We’re not going to change anything we’ve done in the past.” Nyquist extended his unbeaten record to 8 wins (including the Gr1 Florida Derby, Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Gr1 Frontrunner Stakes & Gr1 Del Mar Futurity Stakes) from 8 starts for over US$4.5 million in earnings when winning the 142nd running of the "Run for the Roses" last weekend. Crowned the Eclipse champion 2YO male of 2015, Nyquist became the 21st champion juvenile to win the Kentucky Derby and the first since Street Sense in 2007.
