Southern Cross First-Up For Le Romain

Tuesday, 17th January 2017

Two-time Gr1 winner Le Romain (Hard Spun-Mignard, by Strategic) will open his autumn campaign in the Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 11 February, reports AAP. A winner of the Gr1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in the spring, Le Romain had an easy barrier trial hit-out at Wyong yesterday morning finishing second in a four-horse heat over 845m. "It's the right distance and then he'll probably go to the Canterbury Stakes," trainer Kris Lees said. The Gr1 weight-for-age Canterbury Stakes (1300m) will be run at Randwick on 4 March. Lees said Le Romain was also likely to run in the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on 18 March as his final lead-up to his primary target, the $3 million Gr1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick on 1 April. "He'll trial again next Wednesday and then resume on the 11th," Lees said. "It was only a soft trial this morning but I'm pretty pleased with how he is coming up."
