First Serve Out To Break Southern Drought
First Serve (Swiss Ace-Fuar, by Kaapstad) will bid to become the first South Island-trained sprinter to win Saturday's Gr1 Telegraph since Fritz in 2000, reports theinformant.co.nz. The exciting 4YO has built an imposing record of 7 wins from 9 starts hitherto, highlighted by her victory in the Gr3 Canterbury Breeders' Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton in November. First Serve's most recent start resulted in her demolishing a rating 85 field by 4.5 lengths at Waikouaiti on New Year's Day despite carrying 62.5 kg. "It was a great performance and it was really encouraging to see that building into a Group One race," co-trainer Michael Pitman said. "We know it's a big leap up, but we have a lot of faith in the mare and she deserves her chance." He added: "She's been doing everything right since her last race and I'm really happy with her. It's her first time racing at Trentham, but it's a similar track to Riccarton – both are big roomy tracks with a 1200-metre chute. I don't think she'll have any problem with it."
