Winx Third In Trial

Wednesday, 18th January 2017

Champion mare Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) has finished third in a barrier trial at Rosehill as she builds to an autumn return. In what was her first public outing since scoring a record-breaking 8 length win in the Cox Plate in October, the Chris Waller-trained Winx finished 3.5 lengths behind Gr1-winning sprinter Music Magnate in a 900m open heat yesterday morning. Waller said Winx was spot on at this early stage of her preparation. "I'm really happy with this morning's workout," Waller told Sky Racing. "She's right on song. I'd say she is as fit as she needs to be at this stage. I'm very happy with where she's at." Jockey Hugh Bowman added: "We didn't ask her to do a whole lot this morning, but it was probably as good as she has trialled in her career." Winx will have one more trial before launching her autumn campaign in the Gr2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on 11 February. Her primary seasonal target is the $4 million Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on 8 April. Click here to watch Winx's trial.
