Dale Has Faith In Fell Swoop

Thursday, 19th January 2017

Canberra trainer Matthew Dale says top sprinter Fell Swoop (Not a Single Doubt-Touched in Flight, by Fasliyev) will kick off his autumn campaign in either the Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on 18 February or the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on 25 February, reports Racing.com. The 5YO's primary autumn target is the $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 1 April. Dale is confident that Fell Swoop, who is yet to be successful at Gr1 level but has been placed on four occasions - namely in the Darley Classic (3rd behind Malaguerra), Manikato Stakes (2nd to Rebel Dane), TJ Smith Stakes (2nd to Chautauqua), and the Oakleigh Plate (2nd to Flamberge) - can finally break through this preparation. "He's on track to have an official trial in 16 days time in Canberra and then be first-up in either the Lightning or the Oakleigh Plate," Dale said. "It's not about that he has to improve, it's just that he needs things to go the right way. "He added: "Every year with sprinters, the next three-year-old crop is the worry and it does appear to be as deep a lot of three-year-olds as we've had in a long time so it will be interesting to see how they shape up."
