Moonee Valley Assignment First-Up For Chetwood

Friday, 20th January 2017

Godolphin have confirmed that UK-based jockey James Doyle will partner exciting galloper Chetwood when he kicks off his autumn campaign in the Gr2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley next Friday. The 4YO announced himself as one of the most progressive horses in the country when going through the spring undefeated, including wins in the Gr3 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle and most recently in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes at Caulfield. The son of former champion Australian sire Exceed And Excel boasts an imposing record of 5 wins from 7 starts. "Chetwood improved through the grades in the spring and has continued to please us this preparation," trainer John O'Shea said. "He is up against the big boys now but I'm happy with where he is at." A homebred for Godolphin, Chetwood is a three-quarter brother to Gr3 Newcastle Spring Stakes winner Mearas (Redoute's Choice) and descends from the esteemed family of influential broodmare Voltage (Whiskey Road). This is an outstanding Australian family that includes champion galloper Grand Armee, Gr1 Rosehill Guineas winner Dealer Principal, Gr1 Australasian Oaks winner Anamato, Gr1 Oakleigh Plate winner Drum, champion Hong Kong sprinter Absolute Champion, and Gr1 South African Derby winner Wylie Hall.
