Racing To Return To Sandown

Friday, 20th January 2017

The Sandown Lakeside track has been declared ready to host racing again by senior jockeys and Racing Victoria (RV) stewards following the successful completion of trials on the circuit and its repaired home turn last Friday. Racing will return to the Lakeside track on 1 February, following a four-month hiatus during which the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) engaged a raft of experts to identify and overcome issues that had led to the abandonment of two race meetings last year, and also to improve it as a racing circuit. “Analysis revealed areas of subsidence around the point of the track at which fields were simultaneously descending and turning left-handed, which appeared to cause horses to dip, in turn creating concerns among riders,” MRC General Manager of Racing Jake Norton said. "We are pleased to have been able to pinpoint and resolve those fundamental issues."
