California Chrome Claims 2nd HOTY Crown
California Chrome has been crowned US Horse of the Year for the second time at the Eclipse Awards at Gulfstream Park on the weekend. Named HOTY in 2014, California Chrome becomes just the third horse to claim the prestigious title in non-consecutive years joining Native Dancer (1952 and 1954) and John Henry (1981 and 1984). California Chrome's 2016 season was simply outstanding, with the hulking chestnut winning 7 of his 8 starts, including three Gr1 wins in the Dubai World Cup, Pacific Classic and Awesome Again Stakes. His only defeat came at the hands of the world's highest ranked racehorse, Arrogate, when he was runner-up to that galloper in the Breeders' Cup Classic in November. California Chrome also became the richest North American racehorse of all time ahead with US$14,496,218 in earnings, placing him ahead of 2008 Dubai World Cup winner Curlin with US$10,501,80. California Chrome is set to have his final race start in the inaugural running of the US$12 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park this Saturday.
