Kitasan Black Wins Japanese HOTY

Kitasan Black has been named the Japan Racing Association's 2016 Horse of the Year after an outstanding season that included Gr1 victories in two of Japan's most prestigious races - the Tenno Sho (Spring) and the Japan Cup. Maurice, a winner of three Gr1 races, including two in Hong Kong, finished runner-up denying the champion consecutive Horse of the Year titles. Kitasan Black earned 134 votes to Maurice's 90. The annual JRA Awards will officially take place at a ceremony at Prince Park Tower, Tokyo on Monday, 30 January. Other category winners included:

  • Best 2YO Filly - Soul Stirring
  • Best 2YO Colt - Satono Ares
  • Best 3YO Filly - Sinhalite
  • Best 3YO Colt - Satono Diamond
  • Best Trainer - Yoshito Yahagi
  • Best Sprinter-Miler - Mikki Isle
  • Best Older Mare - Marialite
