Gauci Announces Retirement

Wednesday, 25th January 2017

Veteran jockey Darren Gauci has announced his retirement at the age of 51, reports Racing.com. Gauci, a four-time Melbourne premiership winning hoop, will now be responsible for nurturing the next generation of stars following his appointment as apprentice jockey coach alongside Matt Pumpa at Racing Victoria. "I probably could've ridden for a couple more years but this job came up and I applied because it's something that I've always wanted to do and the time feels right to transition into the next chapter of my life," Gauci said. Gauci rode over 2,500 winners including 35 at Gr1 level. Some of the champion racehorses he was associated with included Super Impose, Shaftesbury Avenue, and 11-time Gr1 winner and champion sire Lonhro whom he partnered to victory in the 2001 Caulfield Guineas.
