Malaguerra Wins Gr2 Australia Stakes

Monday, 30th January 2017

At Moonee Valley in Victoria on Friday night, Eliza Park's Gr1 Galaxy-winning stallion Magnus (Flying Spur-Scandinavia, by Snippets) added a Group success when 5YO gelding Malaguerra (Magnus-Tennessee Morn, by Bletchingly) scored an explosive first-up 2 length win for trainer Peter Gelagotis in the $200,000 Gr2 Australia Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 6YO gelding Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars-Sister Theresa, by At Talaq) & fellow 5YO gelding Sirbible (God's Own-No Fable, by Hemingway). A $32,000 yearling consigned by Ballarto Lodge at the 2013 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, Malaguerra improved his record to 12 wins (including the Gr1 Darley Classic, Gr1 BTC Cup, Gr3 ATC Star Kingdom Stakes & Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap) & 3 placings from 23 starts for $1,574,600 earnings. Malaguerra proved that he had returned as good as ever equalling the rack record of 1:09.29 set by champion sprinter Miss Andretti in the 2006 Gr1 Manikato Stakes. "In our mind, he was clearly the best horse in the race. He's a multiple Group One winner," racing manager Manny Gelagotis told racing.com. "Moonee Valley can be tricky, but the horse showed a lot of class. I expected to see that. He trialled amazing back home." Gelagotis said Malaguerra would make his next appearance in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 11 February. "It's going to take an exciting horse to beat him in the Orr and Futurity," he said.
