Volpe Veloce Wins Listed NZB Insurance Karaka Mile

Monday, 30th January 2017

At Ellerslie in New Zealand on Sunday, Newgate Farm's Gr1-winning shuttle stallion Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) added a restricted black-type success when outstanding 3YO filly Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge-Bardego, by Barathea) scored a thrilling nose victory for trainer Graham Richardson in the $250,000 Listed NZB Insurance Karaka Mile (1600m) for 3YOs, over 3YO colts Heroic Valour (Fastnet Rock-Myrrh, by Nassipour) & Jon Snow (Iffraaj-Orinda, by O'Reilly). Volpe Veloce went to another level to keep her unbeaten record intact on Sunday at the expense of a small but select field of three-year-olds, reports NZ Racing Desk. The daughter of Foxwedge took on a hot line-up of colts and geldings in the Listed NZB Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile and she put them away with a typically gallant performance. "Every time she puts in. I don't know how good she is, she just keeps improving all the time," trainer Graham Richardson said. The aptly named Volpe Veloce, whose name in Italian translates to "fast fox", extended her unbeaten record to 7 wins (including the Gr2 Eight Carat Classic, Gr3 Eulogy Stakes & Listed Castletown Stakes) from 7 starts for NZ$293,125 earnings. Purchased for NZ$240,000 by Richardson Racing at the 2015 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Lyndhurst Farm, Volpe Veloce is a half-sister to Listed Black Opal Stakes winner Delago Bolt from the Gr3 Blue Diamond Preview winning filly Bardego.
