Doncaster First-Up For Villiers Winner
Trainer Kris Lees has revealed he is preparing Sense of Occasion for a bold first-up tilt at the $3 million Gr1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on the opening day of The Championships, reports racingnsw.com.au. Lees successfully employed a similar strategy by winning the Gr2 Villiers Stakes with Sense Of Occasion over the Doncaster course and distance in December. The Villiers victory gave the 6YO an automatic entry in the Doncaster which is scheduled to be run at Royal Randwick on 1 April. "I thought about starting Sense Of Occasion again before the Doncaster, but decided to run him first-up," Lees said. "Obviously this is going to be a tougher assignment than the Villiers, but he races well fresh, so we'll give it another try." Sense of Occasion (Street Sense-Saywaan, by Zabeel) has been tested at Group One level only once before, resulting in a 5th placing behind Sir John Harkwood in last year's Metropolitan Handicap over 2400 metres.
