Trainer Has Second-Up Fears

Monday, 6th November 2017

Trainer Hughie Morrison admits he is worried about second-up syndrome with Marmelo in tomorrow’s $6.2 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington. Marmelo has firmed into outright favourite for the Melbourne Cup after his eye-catching Caulfield Cup run when flashing home from near last to finish sixth. “Sometimes a horse can, what we call, bounce where they run very well the first time and then a bit flat second-up and we’ll only find that out on Tuesday afternoon,” Morrison told ANZ Bloodstock News. “We think we’re happy with the way he is though you can never guarantee it. I don’t think anybody should be going into a handicap race where there are 24 runners with too much confidence, there is so much luck involved.”
