Blue Blooded Mare Ready to Strike Again
Regally bred Irish-bred mare Asama Blue has an opportunity to add another win to her record at Matamata today before embarking on the second phase of her career, reports NZ Racing Desk. A last-start winner over 1550m at Awapuni, the lightly raced 4YO will step out in the Bay Insurance & Dawson Insurance Benchmark Rating 70 (1600m) and will be ridden by Danielle Johnson. "She's in foal to Tavistock and that often gives them a natural lift so we feel that she's going to be pretty competitive again," said part-owner Sir Peter Vela's racing manager Garry Cossey. "She's very well at the moment." Co-owned by Mrs Sue Magnier and Pencarrow Stud principal Sir Peter Vela, Asama Blue began her career in the UK where she won on debut at Haydock last year before being transferred to New Zealand. By former champion Australian sire Fastnet Rock, Asama Blue is out of the Sadler's Wells mare Butterfly Blue and is a direct descendant of celebrated blue hen Best In Show. Her second dam is Gr1 Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride, dam of Better Than Honour, who fetched a world-record price of US$14 million for a broodmare in 2008 and who, in turn, is the dam of US classic winners Rags To Riches & Jazil.
