Werther Pre-Race Antics Guide to Gr1 Prospects
Meanwhile, Werther's former trainer Andrew Campbell has provided an insight that may give a clue as to the horse's chances in Sunday's Gr1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin, reports NZ Racing Desk. Campbell said the New Zealand-bred former Hong Kong Horse of the Year's pre-race demeanour could be an indicator of his winning prospects. "When he won the Hong Kong Derby the lady doing the commentary from the birdcage said she didn't like him – he was trying to kick out at the strapper so as soon as she said that I rang Tommy [co-breeder Tommy Heptinstall] and said whatever you've got on, double it," explained Campbell. "When the horse is like that he's right. He's a loner and likes to be left alone." Werther (Tavistock-Bagalollies, by Zabeel), now trained by champion Hong Kong horseman John Moore, already has four Group 1 victories to his credit, namely the Gr1 Champions & Chater Cup, Gr1 Hong Kong Gold Cup, Gr1 Hong Kong Derby & Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. "It's a bit of a surprise, I didn't think he was a world beater," Campbell said. "I knew he was a really smart horse, but all the breed gets so much better with time – just like his brother Gobstopper."
