Werther Tough to Beat: Berry

Friday, 8th December 2017

Former Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther represents the best chance of a hometown victory after drawing perfectly in barrier three for Sunday's Gr1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin, reports racing.com. At least that's the opinion of Australian jockey Tommy Berry who will be aboard the John Moore-trained 6YO in the HK$25 million feature. "It is a great barrier for a horse like Werther because I can be within striking distance without having to do much work in the early stages," Berry said. "I can find a spot, be where I want to be without spending too much petrol. I spoke with John Moore prior and we thought if he could draw anywhere between three and six it would be perfect." Moore said Werther (Tavistock-Bagalollies, by Zabeel) had enjoyed an ideal preparation and that there would be no excuses on the weekend. "This time in there has been no setbacks whatsoever, everything has gone to plan, he looks a treat, he is all dappled up, his racing weight is good at the moment and when I watched him walk around after his gallop this morning back in the yard he was kicking his brand off so it was good to see," he said.
