Payne On a High After Trial

Tuesday, 23rd January 2018

Trainer David Payne said he was more than satisfied with Ace High's barrier trial performance at Rosehill yesterday. Ace High (High Chaparral-Come Sunday, by Redoute's Choice), a winner of the Gr1 Victoria Derby & Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes last spring, finished fifth in yesterday's star-studded 900 metre trial that also featured champion mare Winx (6th), and Australia's best sprinter Redzel (7th). Payne said Ace High was on track to resume in either the Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on 17 February or the Gr2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on 24 February. "I was very pleased with him and he is on track. He is a much stronger horse, but mentally he is still a bit of a baby," Payne told ANZ Bloodstock News. "We will see how he pulls up in the next few days and then we will decide what race he starts in. He could resume in the Hobartville or the 1200 metres race the week before." Ace High's primary autumn targets are the Gr1 Randwick Guineas, Gr1 Rosehill Guineas and Gr1 Australian Derby in Sydney.
