Gun Runner Has Final Breeze for Pegasus
Gun Runner (Candy Ride-Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway) had his final timed workout at Gulfstream Park on Monday ahead of his career swansong in the US$16 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes on Saturday, reports Blood Horse. The Breeders' Cup Classic winner, who will retire to Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky after the Pegasus, breezed a half-mile in :48.96 before galloping out to five furlongs in 1:02.11. "I loved how he did it," said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asumssen. "Angel [track rider Angel Garcia] was really happy with him and said, 'I never asked him to do anything.'" Blasi said Gun Runner was primed to end his career on a high. "He's just been really special to us and he continues to do exactly what you want him to do," he said. "I'm just really happy with how he got over the ground. He's cooling out great and is ready for Saturday. We couldn't be happier with him." Gun Runner stamped himself as the new king of North American racing with his fourth successive Group 1 triumph and his fifth overall in the BC Classic in November. His record currently reads 11 wins from 17 starts for US$9,037,138 in earnings.
