Merchant Navy Wins Jump-Out

Wednesday, 24th January 2018

Gr1-winning colt Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock-Legally Bay, by Snippets) showed he was on track for the autumn with an eye-catching jump-out performance yesterday, reports racing.com. A brilliant winner of the stallion-making Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in the spring, Merchant Navy looked strong posting an easy 1 length win in an 800m jump-out at Caulfield. Trainer Aaron Purcell said the 3YO was likely to resume in either the Gr2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) or the Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) next month en route to the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in March. "This morning was his first solid hit-out and he went terrific," Purcell said. "He's a horse that is very casual around home and when you don't ask much of him, he doesn't deliver much." Purcell added: "Being a colt, our job is to make him a more valuable colt so the Newmarket will be his main aim this autumn. He'll probably go there second-up and we'll either go to the Rubiton or the Lightning first-up." Merchant Navy's owner Coolmore Stud has flagged the possibility of campaigning the exciting colt on the world stage at Royal Ascot in June.
