TJ Target for Fell Swoop

Friday, 26th January 2018

Trainer Matthew Dale says the $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney is the primary autumn target for smart Canberra sprinter Fell Swoop, reports racingnsw.com.au. However, Dale says the 6YO must show he is back to his brilliant best after a disappointing spring campaign that saw him unplaced in three starts. The most recent of those was in October when he finished last (12th of 12) in The Everest and pulled up distressed with the thumps. "The signs are positive. Ultimately until we get him back to the trials and the races it will tell the tale but it was a natural thing to clear the slate," Dale said. "He's being trained off the beach [at Moruya] this preparation and I'm happy with how he's going at this stage." If all goes to plan, Dale said Fell Swoop is likely to run second-up in the Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on 23 March as a final lead-up to the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on 7 April. "The William Reid sits two weeks before the TJ so the timeline is right. I just want to see him come back after a disappointing prep," Dale said. Fell Swoop has been placed behind Chautauqua in the last two runnings of the TJ in 2016 (2nd) and 2017 (3rd).
