At Warwick Farm in Sydney, former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Gio Ponti (Tale Of The Cat-Chipeta Springs, by Alydar) celebrated his first Australian stakes winner when 4YO Australian-bred gelding Cordero (Gio Ponti-Belle Giselle, by Redoute's Choice) opened his stakes account with a narrow win in the $150,000 Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) for 3YO+, defeating Dee I Cee & Destiny's Kiss. Cordero, who is a half-brother to Gr2 ATC Ajax Stakes winner Messene (Lonhro), improved his record to 6 wins and 1 placing from 12 starts for $297,965 in earnings. Bred by Arrowfield Stud and raced by breeder Jim Cloros, Cordero is out of the beautifully related mare Belle Giselle who hails from the esteemed family of multiple champion sire Zabeel, Australian Guineas winner Baryshnikov, and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winning mother and son Detroit and Carnegie.
