Gun Runner Wins Gr1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational
Newly crowned US Horse of the Year Gun Runner (Candy Ride-Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway) ended his career on a high with a memorable win in the US$16 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (9 furlongs) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The Steve Asmussen-trained 5YO entire, who will now retire to Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky, showed his abundant class when bounding clear over the concluding stages to score by 2.25 lengths over West Coast & Gunnevera. The Pegasus was Gun Runner's fifth consecutive Group 1 win (and his 6th overall) and advanced his record to 12 wins (including the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic, Gr1 Stephen Foster Handicap, Gr1 Whitney Stakes, Gr1 Woodward Stakes, and Gr1 Clark Handicap) and 5 placings from 19 starts for US$16,037,138 in earnings. Gun Runner's total career prize money makes him the second richest North American thoroughbred of all time, behind only Arrogate with US$17,298,514.
