At Ellerslie in New Zealand, Darley's deceased Gr3-winning & multiple Gr1-placed stallion Commands (Danehill-Cotehele House, by My Swanee) added a Group race success when top-class 3YO New Zealand-bred filly Melody Belle (Commands-Meleka Belle, by Iffraaj) cruised to an emphatic win in the $70,000 Gr3 Mongolian Khan Trophy (1200m) for 3YOs, defeating Astor & Gift Of Power. Crowned New Zealand's champion 2YO of last season, Melody Belle was purchased for just $57,500 by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis on behalf of Fortuna Bloodstock at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Haunui Farm. She improved her record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, Gr2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes & Listed Karaka Million) and 2 placings (including the Gr2 WRC Wakefield Challenge Stakes) from 10 starts for NZ$869,668 in earnings. "That was a really good effort," co-trainer Jamie Richards told NZ Racing Desk. "Things haven't gone her way in her last couple of starts and back to her own age group today it was an exciting win." Richards said Melody Belle may now head to the Gr1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa on 19 February.
