Colt Ready to Perform

Tuesday, 30th January 2018

Performer (Exceed and Excel-Gavroche, by Snippets) will be out to justify his billing as a leading Golden Slipper contender when he resumes in the Gr3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained colt made the perfect start to his career when charging home to score on debut in the Listed Arrowfield Breeders' Plate (1000m) at Randwick on 30 September. The son of Exceed And Excel was installed as favourite for the Golden Slipper off the back of that performance, but has since been relegated to second favourite after the win of boom filly Sunlight in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic earlier this month. Stable representative Charlie Duckworth said Performer had made the necessary improvement during his break to be a force in the world's richest juvenile race. "He's taller, stronger and put on a considerable amount of weight," Duckworth told racingnsw.com.au. "He's a more mature colt. We never tightened the screws at all last preparation, he did it on raw ability and that's the reason why we didn't tighten the screws because we had to allow his body to develop and strengthen." Duckworth added: "So far as we're all concerned we still think he is the one to beat [in the Golden Slipper]."
