Ellis Buys Exceed And Excel Colt for $750K
David Ellis added to his stallion syndicate when buying a striking Exceed And Excel colt for $750,000 at yesterday's third session of the NZB National Yearling Sale Series at Karaka. Consigned by Sir Peter Vela's Pencarrow Stud as Lot 455, the colt is out of the Pencarrow-bred mare Our Ella Belle (Encosta de Lago), a winner of the Gr3 Taranaki Cup and third in the Gr1 NZ 1000 Guineas. The colt therefore descends from the successful Belle Fox (NZ) family of New Zealand that includes Gr1 Coolmore Classic winner Plucky Belle, Gr1 South Australian Oaks winner Casey Belle, Gr2 Queensland Guineas winner Winning Belle, as well as Honey Belle, Asgard, Chiming, and Son Of Cyrus. International buyers Peter Moody and Hubie De Burgh as well as local cricketer Brendon McCullum were among the bidders but Ellis was set on filling his stallion syndicate with this colt. "When I visited Pencarrow to inspect him I thought he was a stunning colt," said Ellis. "He's just perfect for the Karaka Million next year and a lovely colt to train on to the 2000 Guineas." Ellis added: "We have had so much luck with this great nursery. It's a farm where we have bought Burgundy and Darci Brahma and I believe he is up there with the quality of those colts. He has filled my stallion syndicate."
