Sydney Cup Target for Rekindling
Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling is likely to be given two major assignments in Australia in the autumn before returning home to Ireland. Owner Lloyd Williams told racing.com yesterday that the UK-bred son of High Chaparral was likely to resume in either the Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on 10 March or the Gr1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on 31 March, before running second-up in the Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on 14 April. He will return to Ireland after contesting the Sydney Cup. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, Rekindling proved that, contrary to popular wisdom, you don’t have to give a foreign horse a lead-up run in Australia prior to the Melbourne Cup with the only other international raider to win the Cup without a lead-up being Vintage Crop way back in 1993.
