Colgan Lands Scott Base Ride

Tuesday, 20th February 2018

Vinnie Colgan has been confirmed as the rider of leading New Zealand Derby contender Scott Base, reports NZ Racing Desk. Colgan is the most successful Derby jockey of the last 20 years claiming six classics in that time, namely on Roysyn (1995), Zonda (1997), Hades (1999), Redoute's Dancer (2007), Habibi (2013), and Rangipo (2016). "It was a tough decision, but the connections feel Vinnie is the perfect fit," said Johno Benner, who trains the 3YO with Hollie Wynyard. Scott Base (Dalghar-Extra Celestial, by Danehill Dancer) is the $5 co-favourite for the Derby with Danzdanzdance following his encouraging fourth in last weekend's Gr2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie. "So far, so good and he's come home in good order. He's eating well and was out at the beach this morning, he's a happy horse," Brenner said. "Hopefully, he can draw a softer gate in the Derby and can get a bit handier. There's probably five or six winning chances and it will come down to who gets the right draw and best run." The Gr1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) will be run at Ellerslie on 3 March.
