Payne Delighted With Ace Colt

Tuesday, 20th February 2018

Trainer David Payne is not ruling out taking on Winx in the autumn with Ace High providing the colt performs up to expectations beginning with Saturday's Gr2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill. "I'm happy with him, we're just building him up to his target. If he finishes a length or two off them I'd be happy," Payne told racingnsw.com.au. "His real targets are the Rosehill Guineas and the Australian Derby. By chance if he wins one over a mile [the Randwick Guineas] he's worth a fortune." Payne added: "We'll see how Winx is going and we will look at the Queen Elizabeth as well." A dual Group 1 winner of the Victoria Derby and Spring Champion Stakes in the spring, Ace High (High Chaparral-Come Sunday, by Redoute's Choice) resumed with an excellent fifth in the Gr2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago recording the second-fastest final 600m split of the race in 34.42 seconds. "He's definitely a better horse and stronger," Payne said. "Often a Derby flattens them and over the years you see them not come back but he's come back well."
