Last Minute Call on Chautauqua

Wednesday, 21st February 2018

A decision on whether star sprinter Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) resumes in Saturday's Gr1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield will be made this morning. Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes indicated the reason for the late call is because the Oakleigh Plate, which is run under handicap conditions, is not the ideal race for a horse like Chautauqua. "In [a] Toorak and Doncaster, there's a winner but there's six hard-luck stories. You have more chance and more luck in a weight-for-age race, because in handicaps most of the other horses shouldn't actually be in the race," Hawkes told racing.com. "The bottom line is there is a float booked for Thursday night to come to Melbourne. We'll decide in the morning whether to accept or not, and make the decision at the last minute." He added: "All plans are...to go towards the Oakleigh Plate, but that could change." Chautauqua is currently on the fourth line of betting for the Oakleigh Plate at $9 with TAB. Russian Revolution heads the market at $4.60 ahead of She Will Reign ($6.50) and Booker ($7.50).
