Chautauqua Concern After Barrier Antics
Star sprinter Chautauqua refused to take part in two barrier trials at Randwick yesterday in a concerning development just eleven days out from his seasonal reappearance. The 6-time Group 1 winner was entered in a 1050 metre trial at 8:35am yesterday morning but refused to jump when the gates opened. Former top juvenile Houtzen went on to win the trial by 1.7 lengths defeating Happy Clapper, Ravi and Bonny O'Reilly in a time of 1:03.15. Racing NSW stewards gave Chautauqua another chance in the following trial but he once again stayed in the gates. Consequently stewards confirmed that Chautauqua will have to compete satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being allowed to race again. He is scheduled to make his autumn return in the Gr1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick on 10 March. Click here to watch trial.
