Blueblood On Debut In Turffontein Stakes Race

Friday, 9th March 2018

At Turffontein in Johannesburg tomorrow, one of the last foals of a leading broodmare will take his place when, on debut, he tackles juvenile black-type company over 1000m in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes. By US-bred Var (Forest Wildcat), South Africa's leading sire of 2YOs in 2016/17, Heavenly Risk (Var-Divine Nymph, by Al Mufti) has a lot to live up to. His very speedy dam was runner-up in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship, and in the breeding barn has left five individual stakes horses including Gr1 South African Classic winner Divine Jury, as well as being grand-dam of Gr1-placed Group winner Redcarpet Captain. Her half-sister Gushing was Gr1-placed, and another half-sister is the dam of Gr1 J&B Met Handicap hero Martial Eagle. Heavely Risk was purchased for R300,000 at the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale by Mike Azzie, an exceptional trainer of sprinters. The debut colt will carry the ANC colours of Dr Richard Maponya, a long-time industry patron.
