Team Rogerson On New Cup Mission

Friday, 9th March 2018

A decade after claiming the Gr1 Melbourne Cup with Zabeel gelding Efficient, canny horseman and NZ Hall of Fame trainer Graeme Rogerson has his eye on a repeat performance after finalising a deal to buy five "ready-made stayers" from owner Lloyd Williams, reports NZ Racing Desk. The team includes Gr1 winner Gallante, currently nominated for the Gr1 Sydney Cup next month, together with Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes winner Assign, twice-winning Pattern, 6YO Galileo gelding My Bantry Bay and unraced High Chaparral 5YO colt Surrey (a son of triple Gr1 Melbourne Cup winning mare Maybe Diva). Rogerson confirmed the purchases and details regarding a newly formed partnership to race the quintet: “We flew to Melbourne last Monday and spent the day with Lloyd at Mount Macedon. We've bought five horses off Lloyd and we think this will be a great lift for New Zealand racing. We've got a couple of genuine Melbourne Cup hopes among them. We're sure these horses will only help our staying ranks. Our Oaks and Derby horses are strong, but our older staying horses are a bit thin on the ground.” He added, “I've put a partnership together. I didn't want to split the five horses up because this way it covers the risk for shareholders if one or two of them don't come up.”
