Efficient & Alandi Head Caulfield-Melbourne Cup Weights
The Lloyd Williams-owned stayers Efficient (2007 Melbourne Cup winner) & Alandi (Europe's dominant stayer of 2009) head the weights released yesterday by Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter for the Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m on October 16) & Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m at Flemington on November 2). Both horses have each been allocated 58kg. First declarations for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate & Melbourne Cup close at noon next Tuesday (September 7).
-
Williams has nominated 23 horses (including a number of European imports) in his bid to win the historic 150th Melbourne Cup (a race he has previously won with Just A Dash in 1981, What A Nuisance in 1985 & Efficient in 2007). Efficient was similarly allocated 58kg in both 2008 & 2009 (when heading the weights with Maldivian), but owing to injury has not raced since winning the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last October. After missing 3 of the past 4 Melbourne Cups with injuries, Williams last week publicly declared just-turned 7YO Efficient may be unlikely to contest this year's renewal. And Carpenter noted: "Peter Pan is the only horse to win 2 Cups (1932 & 1934) having missed the interceding renewal through injury. No horse has won the Cup twice with 3 years between victories."
-
There are only 4 Gr1 races for older horses each year in Europe beyond 2400m & Alandi won 2 of them in 2009: the Irish St Leger (2800m) & French Prix du Cadran (4000m), with 4-time Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup hero Yeats finishing in his wake in both.
-
2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking has been given 57kg in his title defence. The weight represents an increase of 6kg over his winning weight of 51kg & includes a weight-for-age component of 1.5kg. Shocking seeks to join Archer (1861-62), Rain Lover (1968-69), Think Big (1974-75) & Makybe Diva (2003-04-05) as the only horses to win the race in successive years. Makybe Diva had her weight increased by 4.5kg after her initial success in 2003; & Think Big moved from 53kg to 58.5kg in the weights in his dual successes. Carpenter commented: "The 6kg increase given to Shocking includes the weight-for-age component of 1.5kg, providing in effect a net penalty of 4.5kg. It acknowledges his win in the Melbourne Cup & the Gr3 Lexus Stakes (Hotham Handicap 2500m) since weights were released in September 2009. It is the same weight (57kg) allocated to 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed last year, a weight he carried to victory in the 2009 Caulfield Cup."
-
Godolphin (which won the 2008 Caulfield Cup with All The Good & finished 2nd for the 3rd time in the 2009 Melbourne Cup with Crime Scene) has 2 of the highest weighted international entries. Mastery (2009 English St Leger winner over 2920m) & Cavalryman (3rd to superstar Sea The Stars in the 2009 French Gr1 Arc de Triomphe over 2400m) have both been allocated 57.5kg. Their stablemate Campanologist (recent winner of back-to-back Gr1 races in Germany over 2400m) has 56kg.
-
Also on 57.5kg is Japanese entry Jaguar Mail (winner of the Gr1 Tenno Sho over 3200m at Kyoto in May). Jaguar Mail has campaigned overseas twice, finishing a narrow 3rd in the 2008 Gr1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) & 4th (beaten less than 1-length) in the same race last December. Indications are Jaguar Mail will be reserved for another tilt at the Hong Kong race rather than travel to Australia for the Caulfield & Melbourne Cups.
-
The 2008 Tenno Sho winner Meiner Kitz has been allocated 57kg, but has sustained an injury & is unlikely to be a first acceptor. Veteran Japanese stayer Tokai Trick (who won the Gr2 Hanshin Daishoten over 3000m in March) has 54.5kg & is still a strong chance to make the trip.
-
Irish trainer Dermot Weld (the only European to win the Melbourne Cup via Vintage Crop in 1993 & Media Puzzle in 2002) is represented by this year's UK Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) winner Rite Of Passage (57kg), Profound Beauty (54kg), Majestic Concorde (50kg) & Natural High (50kg). Previous Ascot Gold Cup winners to contest the Melbourne Cup in the same year are Drum Taps (9th in 1993 with 58.5kg), Double Trigger (18th in 1995 with 60.5kg) & Yeats (7th in 2006 with 59kg). Carpenter noted: "Rite Of Passage has a unique profile, having had 7 of his 10 lifetime starts in either jumps races or national hunt flat races (jumpers flat). His Ascot Gold Cup victory was achieved in only his 3rd run in a professional flat race & his 1st in a black-type event. With 57kg he is at the lower end of the scale for an Ascot Gold Cup winner & takes the same weight allocated to Kayf Tara in 1998 after he won England's premier staying event at just his 5th race start." Profound Beauty ran 5th behind Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup with 51.5kg & was allocated 53.5kg last year but did not make the trip to Australia. The only mare to win the Melbourne Cup with more weight is Makybe Diva (55.5kg in 2004 & 58kg in 2005) while Empire Rose carried 53.5kg to victory in 1988.
-
This year's UK Gr2 Goodwood Cup (3200m) winner Illustrious Blue has been allocated 55kg for English trainer William Knight. Previous Goodwood Cup winners to contest the Melbourne Cup in the same year are Double Trigger (17th in 1995 with 60.5kg), Grey Shot (7th in 1996 with 55kg), Persian Punch (3rd in 2001 with 57.5kg), Jardine's Lookout (7th in 2002 with 56kg), Distinction (19th in 2005 with 56.5kg) & Yeats (7th in 2006 with 59kg).
-
Sans Frontieres, winner of the UK Gr2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes (2400m) & Gr3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2656m) at his last 2 starts for English trainer Jeremy Noseda also has 55kg.
-
Hong Kong entrant Mr Medici, who won this year's Gr1 Champion & Chaters Cup (2400m) at Sha Tin similarly has 55kg & is being primarily targeted at the Caulfield Cup by his trainer Peter Ho.
-
UK trainer Luca Cumani has 4 entries: Manighar (54kg), previous Melbourne Cup place-getters Bauer (53.5kg) & Purple Moon (53.5kg), plus last weekend's UK Goodwood March Stakes (14 furlongs) winner Drunken Sailor. Purple Moon has sustained an injury & has already been ruled out of contention.
-
Americain (trained in France by Alain de Royer Dupre & owned by Australian interests) has been allocated 54kg. He defeated Manighar in the Gr2 Prix de Kergolay (3000m) last week at Deauville.
-
Among the entries from Australian Hall-Of-Fame Legend Bart Cummings (who already boasts victories in 7 Caulfield Cups & 12 Melbourne Cups) are: 2009 Gr1 Cox Plate winner So You Think (56kg); star 4YO mare Faint Perfume (52kg) following 3YO victories in both the Gr1 Crown Oaks (2500m) & Gr1 Stud Stakes (Storm Queen, 2000m); & Dariana (51.5kg) after defeating the males in the Gr1 Queensland Derby (2400m) in June. All 3 are owned in partnership by Dato Tan Chin Nam (who holds the record of 4 Melbourne Cup wins as an owner with Think Big in 1974-75, Saintly in 1995 & Viewed in 2008). Other leading entries for Cummings include dual Gr1 winner Sirmione (55kg), Moatize (52kg), comeback galloper Empire's Choice (51kg) & Precedence (50.5kg).
-
Among the prominent Australian 4YOs are: Gr1 AJC Derby (2400m) winner Shoot Out (55kg); Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) winner Monaco Consul (54kg); & Gr1 AJC Oaks (2400m) winner Once Were Wild (51.5kg).
-
Among the older Australian-trained horses are: triple Gr1-winner Metal Bender (56kg); Victorian & South Australian Derby winner Rebel Raider (55.5kg); Lloyd Williams entry Zipping (55.5kg) who has won the last 3 renewals of the Sandown Classic (2400m) & in March also won the Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington; Sydney Cup (3200m) winner Jessicabeel (52.5kg); & Rosehill Guineas (2000m) winner Zabrasive (53kg).

The 1st NZ-bred foal by 2007 champion European sprinter & The Oaks Stud's Gr1-wining stallion Sakhee's Secret (Sakhee-Palace Street, by Secreto) has been born at the Cambridge-based farm: a colt out of the stud's Zabeel mare Feel (a grand-daughter of the great racemare Horlicks). On the track, Sakhee's Secret (who is standing his 2nd season at The Oaks for NZ$15,000+GST) recorded 5 wins from 8 starts (including 2007's UK Gr1 July Cup over 6 furlongs at Newmarket) before retiring to England's Whitsbury Manor Stud for the 2008 season; he was crowned Europe's champion sprinter of 2007, with a Timeform rating of 128 ahead of Australian stars Miss Andretti (127) & Takeover Target (126). Manager Rick Williams said Sakhee's Secret was bred to 108 mares in his 1st season at The Oaks last year & noted: "He is proving to be a very popular horse & we've noticed an increased interest in him from Australian agents & breeders. The Australians have become well aware of the significance of the Gr1 July Cup form in recent years & they know just how hard it is to win that race in particular."

Sufficient To Stand At NZ Highview Stud
Hamilton studmaster Brent Gillovic announced juvenile stakes-winning & now 4YO stallion Sufficient (Zabeel-Fleur De Chine, by Centaine) will join Highview Stud's roster for the 2010 season at a fee of NZ$4,000+GST (standing alongside Danroad, Align & Kashani). Sufficient (a NZ$120,000 yearling at the 2007 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) won 2008's Listed Great Northern Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie at his 2nd start & Gillovic enthused: "There are diminishing opportunities for studs to stand a stakes-winning son of Zabeel & I am sure his services will be strongly sought after by NZ breeders. He is 1 of only 3 male stakes-winning 2YOs ever sired by Zabeel, which puts him in rare & distinguished company. The others are none other than Hong Kong champion Vengeance Of Rain & Australian superstar Octagonal. Sufficient was a top-class galloper & his pedigree is outstanding. He is a lovely horse who is going to let down nicely before the stud season. He has a great looking head on him & is a perfect stallion choice for the NZ industry. The trend at this year's yearling sales was for Australian buyers to buy yearlings who would develop into the middle-distance type of staying horses, which NZ has traditionally been renowned for. Sufficient certainly fits the mould of a sire who can leave these type of horses. There is not a flaw to be found in his pedigree & it contains many of the stallion breed-shapers of NZ: Sir Tristram, Zabeel, Centaine, Sound Reason & Oncidium." Sufficient's Gr2-winning dam Fleur De Chine has also produced Gr1 SAJC Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder & this is also the family of US Gr1 John Mabee Handicap winner Black Mamba, Gr1 AJC Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor & NZ Gr2 Wellington Guineas winner Rios. And his multiple champion sire Zabeel boasts 40 individual Gr1 winners, 88 individual Group winners & 127 individual stakes-winners (his progeny have won 10 Derbies, 8 Oaks, 4 Cox Plates, 3 Melbourne Cups & 3 Caulfield Cups).

As well as The Aga Khan’s unbeaten 2008 Gr1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning 5YO mare Zarkava, Sea The Stars's initial book includes “a host of other young Gr1-winners such as Alexander Goldrun, Finsceal Beo, Speciosa & Lush Lashes”. Zarkava's dam Zarkasha is also on the list, as are the dams of The Aga Khan's top-class runners Azamour, Darjina & Behkabad. Other notable names include Song, a daughter of the blue hen Jude who topped last year's Tattersalls December Sales when selling for 1.7 million guineas (A$3.142m), Spirit Of Tara (dam of Echo Of Light) & Drama Class (dam of Irish Oaks runner-up Stage Gift). Sea The Stars stands at The Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland & manager Pat Downes commented: “Sea The Stars has got an extremely exciting book of mares - not many 1st-season sires would have covered the kind of book that he has & it just proves what high regard he was held in. He's got a busy year ahead.” Sea The Stars “has already covered a test pony mare in preparation for his new career” & Downes enthused: “The test cover went very well & he's certainly ready for his new job. We're now just waiting for the covering season to start.”

Kentucky Mixed Sale: US$340k Lavender Sky
In the US early this morning (Australian time), Dr William Lockridge (acting on behalf of “a foreign client”) paid US$340,000 for dual-winning & dual Gr2-placed 6YO mare Lavender Sky (Mt Livermore-Munnaya, by Nijinsky II) during initial action at the 1-day Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington. Lavender Sky (consigned by Three Chimneys Sales as agent) was sold as a broodmare prospect & Lockridge (a real estate broker who founded Ashford Stud, now owned by Coolmore) told bloodhorse.com: “She is very correct. I wish she was a little bigger, but she is very well made. The mares I’ve had success with were mares that could run. That’s one of the criteria that I look for & they also have to be out of one of the blue hen families, which this mare certainly is.” Lockridge declined to identify his client, but said Lavender Sky's purchase “is the 1st of a lot of things we'll do together.” He added the mare will remain in Kentucky & be bred this year. Lavender Sky’s 3rd dam is Kamar, a 1979 Canadian champion & 1990 Kentucky Broodmare-Of-The-Year; Kamar’s offspring included 1990 Gr1 Kentucky Oaks winner Seaside Attraction, Canadian champion Key To The Moon & triple Gr1-winner Gorgeous.

It’s great for everyone involved when you’re able to close the deal, whether it’s in the ring or after the sale. Even though this sale occurred privately, it was accomplished because the auction process brought everybody together. The fact that Point Ashley & Spoken Fur were catalogued & on the grounds for inspection at Keeneland show-cased them to a world-wide audience & announced they were available for purchase.” Keeneland director of sales Geoffrey Russell added: “We were disappointed when Point Ashley & Spoken Fur were withdrawn from the sale, but we are delighted the parties were able to negotiate private sale agreements.”

Dunkirk To Begin Stud Career At Coolmore Ashford
US 4YO stallion Dunkirk (Unbridled's Song-Secret Status, by A.P.Indy) who finished runner-up in both 2009’s Gr1 Belmont Stakes & Gr1 Florida Derby “will stand the 2010 season at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky for US$10,000” reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Dunkirk (whose dam Secret Status won both the 2000 Gr1 Kentucky Oaks & Gr1 Mother Goose Stakes) “came out of the Belmont with a non-displaced condylar fracture of the left hind cannon bone”; he underwent surgery & returned to training with Todd Pletcher “but did not make it back to the work tab”. Ashford manager Dermot Ryan confirmed: “It’s a pity Dunkirk had to retire, as we all expected he would have a huge year on the track in 2010. On the other hand it’s great to be able to stand a horse like him, with his combination of great ability, fantastic looks & a top-notch pedigree. He’s by Unbridled’s Song, who has been so consistent that his fee has stood at US$100,000 or more for 8 consecutive years. Also, his pedigree contains the same major components – Unbridled & A.P.Indy – as Tapit, who has done so well that his fee has quadrupled to US$50,000 in the space of 3 years. Empire Maker, another member of the Unbridled male line, stands for US$50,000 after siring 4 Gr1-winners in his initial 2 crops, so we think Dunkirk is great value at US$10,000.” Dunkirk was the US$3.7 million sale-topper at the 2007 Keeneland September Yearling auction.

NZ Court Battle Over Princess Coup Sale
In New Zealand yesterday, lawyers for high-profile owners John Bromley & Ray Coupland appeared in the High Court in Hamilton as Bromley sought an order to stop the sale of the pair's 4-time Gr1-winning Australian-bred 5YO mare Princess Coup (Encosta de Lago-Stoneyfell Road, by Sovereign Red) at next week's NZ Bloodstock National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka. Dual NZ Horse-Of-The-Year & 7-time Gr1-winning 6YO mare Seachange (Cape Cross-Just Cruising, by Broad Reach) has foaled a colt by Cambridge Stud’s Zabeel at The Oaks Stud last week, reports thoroughbredinternet.com. UK Tatts Breeding Stock Day-3: $513k Bitooh
Outgoing Irish National Stud chief executive John Clarke (acting as bloodstock advisor to the Tsui family’s Sunderland Holding) has been very active during the Tattersalls December Mare Sale acquiring mates for their 6-time Gr1-winner Sea The Stars, who is to stand his initial breeding season at The Aga Khan's Giltown Stud next year. Clarke (accompanied by trainer John Oxx) paid 270,000 guineas (A$513,000) for French maiden-winning 4YO mare Bitooh (Diktat-Sitara, by Salse) consigned by Darley & sold in-foal to former shuttler King’s Best. Bitooh is a half-sister to this year's Gr1 Irish Derby runner-up Golden Sword & from the family of both Gr1 English Oaks winner Alexandrova & Gr1-winner Magical Romance. Bitooh originally sold at Tattersalls as a foal for just 26,000 guineas (A$49,400) & was later resold for 340,000 guineas (A$646,000) as a yearling. Clarke told racingpost.com: “There are various options about where she could go & Mrs Tsui will have a think, but it's certainly possible that she could go to Sea The Stars. I know the mare's family well, as we used to look after the great grandam Soumana at the Irish National Stud for a Swiss client Dieter Hofemeier. We also sold her daughter Souk as a yearling to Luca Cumani, so it's a family I've been watching for years.”

Massarra’s dam Rafha (who won France’s Gr1 Prix de Diane-French Oaks) has also produced former European Champion 1st Season Sire & Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit. Magnier told racingpost.com: “She’ll come back to Coolmore & the cross of Massarra’s dam Danehill with Galileo is one that’s worked before.
