UK "Braces For Another Major Corruption Inquiry"
British racing "must brace itself for another major corruption inquiry with Newmarket trainer Jeff Pearce, jockey Jerry O'Dwyer & former Classic-winning trainer Geoff Huffer among 8 people facing an array of British Horseracing Authority charges related to the running & riding of Sabre Light at Lingfield in December 2008," reported racingpost.com. Sabre Light "was uneasy on the exchanges before his bid for a 4-timer in the 10 furlongs event, in which he also drifted to 7-2 second favourite before finishing 5th under O'Dwyer & the BHA immediately launched an investigation, having earlier contacted officials at the track to alert them to the betting patterns". Sabre Light ran in the colours of Newmarket publican Fran O'Brien, but the BHA "alleges he was owned by Huffer, who is also accused of laying the horse to lose with the benefit of inside information". The charges facing Pearce include "preventing Sabre Light running on its merits, dishonestly concealing the true ownership of Sabre Light & attempting to mislead BHA investigators". O'Dwyer is charged with "intentionally failing to ensure Sabre Light ran on its merits".

NSW Stewards Discover Foam Under Canterbury Scales
Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy has put "officials around NSW on heightened alert" after "pieces of foam padding were discovered plugged under the weighing machine at Canterbury Racecourse", reported The Sydney Morning Herald. Murrihy confirmed the "pieces of foam padding resembled that which jockeys regularly place under their saddles" & noted: "We searched all the jockeys' gear at Canterbury (on Tuesday) to see whether the jigsaw fitted the pieces. We came up blank there. There is a possibility it was used at the previous Canterbury meeting on May 5. It just shows these old tricks are still alive & well. I think everyone has a story of cheating on the scales. It is an on-going battle of wits between the wily jockey endeavouring to make the weight & keep the ride & the officials at the scales."

Riverdene Sires Join Kooringal Stud Roster
NSW's Wagga Wagga-based Kooringal Stud announced former Riverdene Stud stallions Enemy Of Average (stakes-winning $800,000 yearling whose oldest progeny are yearlings), Marwina (dual Gr3-winner & Gr1-placed who boasts close to 300 winners) & Zariz (dual Gr2-winner whose progeny have won over distances from 1000-2400m) have joined imported Argentine Gr1-winner Alert & local Gr1-winner Bureaucracy on its 2010 roster in the property's centenary year. Kooringal principal Stuart Lamont noted: "The addition of Enemy Of Average, Marwina & Zariz fits Kooringal Stud's profile perfectly & complements the 2 stallions which were previously going to comprise the roster before the opportunity arose. Alert is now approaching his 4th season at stud in Australia & it was important that we had other options to offer our loyal client base during the period it takes for him to establish himself with his early runners."

Sirmione Owners Threaten Legal Action Over Whip
However in a headline-hogging aftermath to the Gr1 Australian Cup, the owners of runner-up Sirmione "are threatening legal action if stewards refuse to consider stripping Zipping" of victory, reported The Herald-Sun. Zipping's jockey Nick Hall "disregarded the whip rules" to get Zipping home by a nose & Les Smith said the owners were "furious that stewards did not alert them to the potential for a protest". Smith said stewards, aware of Hall's indiscretion, "should have tapped us on the shoulder & informed us that we would have favourable grounds for a protest immediately after the race, or done their job & protested themselves". Smith declared yesterday: "It wasn't until this morning (Sunday) that we learned Hall had been fined $1,000 (for breach of the whip rulesA & said in his defense that had he not whipped Zipping 10 times before the 100m, he wouldn't have won the race. When owners & our trainer Bart Cummings are caught up in the moment, it is up to the stewards to inform us that a protest should be considered. If we didn't protest, why didn't they? They knew Hall had broken the rules and, if a protest were lodged, it had every chance of being upheld. Yet they said nothing, did nothing & let the placings stand, before they then hauled Hall over the coals for his whip wrongdoing." Smith added chief steward Terry Bailey "told the media that the owners/trainer would have had every right to protest. Why didn't he tap us on the shoulder & suggest it, or do it himself? As far as we are concerned, it is no different to a positive swab: information that comes to light after correct weight has been declared. We will speak with Bart & consider our position. I am not one for litigation. I know that Lloyd Williams (Zipping's owner) has put multi-millions of dollars into racing, but so have I. What is more important is that a jockey has broken the rules, has admitted it & has been fined a pittance. If this is not sorted out, the whip rules will become a joke." In reply, Bailey told the newspaper there was "unrestricted use of the whip in the final 100m" & he thought Luke Nolen (Sirmione's jockey) "had his chance to win. We penalised Nick Hall for use of the whip prior to the final 100m, but Sirmione had his chance in that last 100m."

Stewards Probe Betfair Punters In Nikolic Case
A small group of Australian punters “who have accounts with the world's largest betting exchange Betfair, will be the basis of an investigation into jockey Danny Nikolic by Racing Victoria stewards which starts today”, reported The Age in Melbourne. The inquiry follows Betfair's investigators alerting stewards around Australia “to a series of abnormal transactions” after “careful monitoring” of those accounts “revealed significant spikes on certain races” with “multiple changes” in the value of the bets. Investigations are “also probing a relationship between the account holders”. Betfair spokesman Hugh Taggart commented last night: “We are not able to reveal any information on specific accounts. However, if RV stewards have concerns about those parties we are able to suspend them betting with the company.” Betfair’s security process can analyse punters' betting patterns & “throw a red flag if a punter starts laying horses for large amounts rather than backing them to win”.

Swamp Fever Hits Britain For 1st Time Since 1976
In Britain overnight, racehorse handlers “have been put on red alert to look out for signs of swamp fever (equine infectious anaemia) after government department Defra confirmed the 1st outbreak of the disease in England for over 30 years” reported racingpost.com. Two horses in a batch of 9 imported from Romania via Belgium “tested positive for the disease on premises in Wiltshire & have been humanely destroyed on the instructions of Defra’s chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens. British Horseracing Authority director of equine science & welfare Tim Morris commented: “At present Defra does not think horseracing will be affected or that the risk of spread is high. EIA is spread by biting flies & that’s unlikely at this time of year & with the current weather. Nevertheless, we should not be complacent. The BHA has advised all its veterinary officers & relevant racing stake-holders to be aware of the signs of this disease.”

Victorian Racing Station On Fire Alert
Following last February’s devastating bush fires in Victoria, Victorian racing and sports station Radio Sport 927 has been approved as a commercial broadcaster to disseminate bushfire and emergency warnings state-wide. The agreement, signed recently with the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Bob Cameron, and Emergency Services Commissioner, Bruce Esplin, has come about as a result of Radio Sport 927 being the only commercial broadcasting network with state-wide coverage. This has made it a vital partner for fire risk and emergency alerts this summer. The Victorian State Government announced a Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS) that will interrupt radio broadcasts before potentially life-threatening fires so that Victorians can react quickly to the alerts. Radio Sport 927 general manager Noel Crowe said the racing and sports station was the best equipped of all commercial radio stations to support the Government’s initiative: “Radio Sport 927 covers 92 per cent of the state through our main Melbourne signal and via 15 transmitters that are located near major regional Victorian cities.” The frequencies Radio Sport 927 broadcasts on are: Radio Sport 927 AM Melbourne, 1359 AM Mildura, 106.9 FM Swan Hill, 88.0 FM Horsham 945 AM Bendigo, 1314 AM Ballarat, 1260 AM Shepparton, 99.3 FM Wangaratta, 88.0 FM Heyfield, 88.0 FM Moe, 92.7 FM Yarram, 87.6 FM Traralgon, 87.6 FM Bairnsdale, 89.9 FM Lakes Entrance and 95.5 FM Orbost.

Singleton & Waterhouse Slam New Whip Rules
Leading owner-breeder John Singleton (principal of Strawberry Hills Stud & part-owner of sales company) "has become the latest racing player to savage the controversial new whip rules," reported The Sydney Morning Herald. Singleton told Melbourne's Sport 927 radio station yesterday: "The whip rule means you (jockeys] lose your 5% (of prize-money earned, for a breach) & there is not a jockey in Australia that I wouldn't be saying to, 'Don't worry about your fine, I'll pay you double the fee, just win the race'." And leading bookmaker Robbie Waterhouse told the newspaper: "In a submission to authorities back in January, I alerted them to all the problems they faced, how it will depress betting in racing. Everyone is talking about not wanting to bet unless they see horses ridden out with the whip. I think it is starting to have an effect on betting turnover."

Spokesperson for the Tender, Rod Dugan, noted that, "From the lower fee stallions right through to the higher end of our list we have not previously had the number of tenders lodged to the stallions. Proceeds of the tender help fund the Breeders Gift fillies and mares race the Tamworth Jockey Club runs in February. Among the top echelon of stallions in this year's scheme are Ferocity, Monashee Mountain, Hidden Dragon, Greenwood Lake, War Trace, Southern Image, Benicio, Danasinga, Alert, Lucky Owners, Beautiful Crown, Desert King, Written Tycoon, Primus & Golden Snake.

Commentator Saves Fiasco At Port Augusta
The swift action of South Australia's leading racecaller Hilton Donaldson "stopped what would have been a no-race when the barriers were at the wrong distance only moments before the field was dispatched in the Maiden Plate at Port Augusta" yesterday, reported racenet.com.au. The field was in the barriers ready to start, when Donaldson "told the Sky Channel audience to 'hold on for a moment' & yelled from his commentary box to the chief steward to warn him the barriers were at the 1400m mark instead of the correct 1500m". The steward alerted the starter "who was on his stand ready to release the field" & the disaster was averted. The horses were backed out of the gates & the barriers hurriedly moved back up the chute to the 1500m start before the race was run (& won by White Banner).

Da' Tara Wins US Gr1 Belmont Stakes
Robert LaPenta's colt Da' Tara (Tiznow-Torchera, by Pirate's Bounty) ended previously unbeaten colt Big Brown's US Triple Crown bid by leading all-the-way to blitz his rivals by 5.25-lengths in the US$1 million Gr1 Belmont Stakes (12 furlongs) for 3YOs before 94,476 fans in sweltering 96-degrees Farenheit heat at Belmont Park in New York. Da' Tara (ridden by Alan Garcia for trainer Nick Zito) defeated Denis Of Cork (Harlan's Holiday-Unbridled Girl, by Unbridled) & dead-heaters Ready's Echo (More Than Ready-Menekineko, by Kingmambo) & Anak Nakal (Victory Gallop-Misk, by Quiet American). Big Brown (Boundary-Mien, by Nureyev) "broke alertly but slipped a bit leaving the gate" & jockey Kent Desormeaux then positioned the hot favorite behind Da' Tara heading into the 1st turn, reported thoroughbredtimnes.com; Desormeaux moved Big Brown off the rail & was 1.5-lengths benhind Da' Tara "on the backstretch" but the jockey "said he had no horse turning for home & began easing his mount in the stretch". Despite the poor showing, Desormeaux's confidence in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby & Gr1 Preakness Stakes winner "did not waiver" & he told reporters: "This is still the best horse I've ever ridden. He's not lame; nothing was wrong. When I turned for home, I had no horse. I thought the race was playing into us, but when I asked Big Brown to engage, I had no horse. I was done." Da' Tara (the 1st gate-to-wire winner of the Belmont since Swale in 1984) was a US$175,000 yearling at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected sale; he was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm & at his previous start he finished 2nd in the Listed Barbaro Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Pimlico on May 17. Overall Da' Tara now has 2 wins from 8 starts for US$664,067 earnings.

US Tsunami Alert 1: Congress Plans June Racing Probe
In the US, the headline-hogging Congressional subcommittee which has lifted the lid on steroid use in baseball in a high-profile investigation & is now turning its attention to American racing "could schedule a hearing as early as June to examine breakdowns, medication use & breeding practices in thoroughbreds," reported bloodhorse.com. The US House Subcommittee On Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection sent letters last week to Ed Martin (president of the Association Of Racing Commissioners International, which represents 44 state racing commissions), Ogden Mills Phipps (chairman of The US Jockey Club), Frank Stronach (chairman of Magna Entertainment), Robert Evans (president of Churchill Downs) & Charles Hayward (president of the New York Racing Association) demanding information be supplied by June 2 (next Monday) about racehorse breakdowns & drug use. The subcommittee's ranking member is Congressman Ed Whitfield of Kentucky whose press secretary Kristin Walker confirmed "plans call for a hearing to be held in June".

US Tsunami Alert 2: Congress Targets Racing Drugs
The US Congressional subcommittee's letter cited concerns that "leading officials in the sport" have "failed to tackle long-standing concerns over the welfare of the thoroughbred horse" reported bloodhorse.com. It suggested the "thoroughbred breed has become increasingly fragile" & noted the "endemic use of legalised medication in the US has been cited as one potential factor in a weakening of the thoroughbred breed". The Committee has "also requested the names of all trainers who have been sanctioned for breaking drugs rules over the last 5 years, plus the nature & severity of all injuries to horses over that period". The subcommittee said it plans to "introduce & consider bipartisan legislation to address the problem" of performance-enhancing drugs in sports.

US Tsunami Alert 3: Senator Warns Action Is Imminent
In response to the US Congressional subcommittee's actions, trainer Rick Hiles warned: "The first thing we don't need is the federal government getting into our business. We need to be out in front to show we're doing what's needed (as an industry)." However Kentucky Senator Damon Thayer told bloodhorse.com: "The thought of the federal government regulating horse racing is frightening! But if we can't get it right on the state level, the federal government can & will usurp the right of states to regulate horse racing."

Doubts Raised Over Dubai World Cup Race Times
In Dubai, "serious doubts have been raised about the times officially returned for the last 5 races at Saturday's World Cup meeting, including a supposed record set by Jay Peg when winning the Gr1 Duty Free (1777m)" revealed racingpost.co.uk. Emirates Racing Authority steward Gerard Bush confirmed sectional times for the 6 thoroughbred races "had been removed from the official website & an inquiry was being held into all timing issues". Jay Peg was credited with setting as new track record 1min 46.2sec, despite winning trainer Herman Brown saying immediately after the race: "I didn't think they went that fast." And Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner Sun Classique was credited as running just 0.05sec outside the record, while Curlin's World Cup time was announced as the 3rd-fastest for the race (behind track record-holder Dubai Millennium & Invasor). The alert was raised by the UK Racing Post, whose time experts "came up with discrepancies of almost exactly 1 second over the official return for all races after the opening thoroughbred race" (the Godolphin Mile). Bush commented: "We thought the times were okay on the night, but there does appear to be a question mark & the sectional times are probably wrong. We're not sure whether that means the overall times are also wrong, but we're looking into it."

Vets Didn't Suspect EI At Eastern Creek
Retired High Court judge Ian Callinan's on-going inquiry into how Equine Influenza entered Australia has heard veterinarians attending horses at Sydney's Eastern Creek Quarantine Station had no experience with equine influenza & did not suspect it was present when several horses initially exhibited symptoms. Randwick Equine Centre's Dr Greg Nash (who attended the Darley shuttle stallions) said high temperatures & nasal discharge did not immediately alert him to EI because it had never previously been seen in Australia. And because imported horses have been vaccinated against the disease overseas & have also been in quarantine for 2-3 weeks before they arrive in Australia, he assumed "it would have been apparent in pre-export quarantine facilities". Both Dr Nash & fellow Randwick Equine Centre vet Dr Joe Bruyn confirmed they had not showered when leaving Eastern Creek in recent years due to the poor facilities & lack of enforcement of the rule to do so by the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service.

Swamp Fever Hits Ireland
In Ireland, "horse owners & those who have mares & foals returning to Britain from Ireland are being put on alert after 2 cases of fatal Equine Infectious Anemia were diagnosed at the Virology Unit of the Irish Equine Centre," reported racingpost.co.uk. The disease is very rare in Ireland &, in the case of the mare & foal, "contaminated plasma given to treat another condition is suspected as the cause". EIA can also be transmitted through contaminated needles, teeth rasps, stomach tubes or other abrasive instruments.

Florida Day-1: US$125,000 Mil Kilates
In the US early this morning, Matthews Stables paid US$125,000 for 12-year-old broodmare Mil Kilates (a daughter of Gold Alert in foal to Saarland) during initial action on Day-1 of the 4-day Ocala Breeders' Sales Co fall mixed sale, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Mil Kilates (who is out of winning Silver Hawk mare Flying Honors) was consigned by Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield as agent; she won both the 1997 Gr3 Affectionately Handicap & 1999 Gr3 Pimlico Distaff Handicap, & was also Gr1-placed. Matthews Stables is the North American breeding, sales & racing firm of Ian Matthews, who moved to the US 5 years ago & "plans to disperse his English holdings this year in order to focus on the US thoroughbred racing industry". Matthews confirmed: "I have mostly turf mares who can throw horses that go 10 or 12 furlongs, so they're not very useful here. I'm completely restocking. I plan to be involved in breeding, selling & racing. This mare will go to Ocala Stud & I'll probably breed her next year in Kentucky." Matthews has already bred Gr3 Kentucky Cup Juvenile winner Stream Cat. Meanwhile Saarland (by Unbridled) is a Gr2 winner whose 1st foals arrive next year.
