UK Track Great Leighs Racing Again In 6 Weeks
Great Leighs racecourse (the 1st completely new racecourse in Britain for 80 years) which was "crushed under an avalanche of debts when forced to close its doors" last week "should be racing again, under new ownership, in around 6 weeks' time," reported racingpost.com. That was "the firm indication from Deloitte's corporate finance partner Carlton Siddle, who was officially called in last week when the dreams of track founder John Holmes were broken by financial difficulties, forcing the Essex track into administration". Siddle confirmed "potential buyers are circling", with "Arena Leisure the 2-1 favourite from other racecourse groupings & Ladbrokes quoted at odds of 8-1". Siddle noted: "We have already been approached by a number of parties, all of whom wish to continue racing at Great Leighs. We have a duty to creditors to realise the most advantageous amount from the sale of the assets & Great Leighs is being marketed as a going concern as a racecourse. We are not marketing it as a break-up & the principal interest we have had so far has acknowledged that." Siddle's process "is aimed at culminating in a sale in the middle of next month". (Jan 23)

UK Yearlings Final Average Down 22%
Overall at the Doncaster St Leger Festival Sale, turnover fell 42% to £1,244,699 (A$2.6m) on a smaller catalogue & the £11,697 (A$24,500) average dropped 22%. The £10,000 (A$21,000) median was down only £250 (A$525) & the increased attendance sale saw a clearance rate of 73%. Doncaster managing director Henry Beeby summed up: "Satisfied. That is the word that would sum up the last 2 days trade for the newest sale on the oldest date in the DBS sales calendar. The market is selective, but bring a likely sort in to the sales arena & competition is as fierce as ever. Whilst we have failed to match last year's figures, the consensus among our vendors was that they were happy with the trade, pin-hookers made profits & the unique St Leger Sales atmosphere was backed up by plenty of potential buyers viewing proceedings. Given world-wide economic trends that has to mean satisfied is a fair reflection. A clearance rate of 73% & a median that was essentially identical to last year tell the real story & while the sale is down, we purposely took fewer horses so a turnover comparison is irrelevant. We firmly believe the St Leger Festival Sales have a real future as a commercial alternative to some in the autumn sales calendar & the competition for places endorse that view. It occupies a unique date in the calendar, is well attended & will pump out the winners as it did from last year's 1st catalogue." (Sep 15)

Pro-Ride's Ian Pearse explained: "If you're using a wax, it goes from a solid like a candle & can instantly turn into a liquid, depending on what temperature it gets to. With our sorts of binders, it never starts as a solid. It always has an elastic feel like putty. As it gets hotter, it doesn't just turn into a liquid." He likened hot wax & cold sand to oil & water: "they don't bond!" Pearse (who began his company in 1985 by installing synthetic surfaces for other equestrian events, such as dressage arenas) originally used wax, but decided to change to what he considers a better binder. Through his research, Pro-Ride has turned a hot polymetric binder into a cool water-like liquid that can be more easily applied. Pearse said: "That is the main reason why we can fix this, where the others can't because they all use hot binders. You can't put a hot binder on wet sand. But you can put a liquid binder like this on wet sand." Another problem with wax is that when it heats up, it melts & migrates to the bottom of the track. "That's why a lot of them will get harder & harder on the bottom & softer & softer on top," he added. Pearse explained Pro-Ride's liquid binder "doesn't perform that way & remains more stable in hotter weather than wax-based products". Pro-Ride (which has been installed in 15 training tracks in Australia & 1 training facility in Kentucky) "can withstand extreme temperatures: it has performed successfully from -15 to 45 degrees Celsius (5 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit)". Eremein Wins Festival Stakes
Former Arrowfield Stud & later Eliza Park Stud shuttler & triple US Gr1 winner Timber Country (Woodman-Fall Aspen, by Pretense) added a black-type success when 5-time Gr1-winning 6YO gelding Eremein (Timber Country-Marrego, by Marscay) returned from a 10-months break to thump his rivals by 3-lengths in the $80,000 Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney. Despite carrying top-weight of 61kgs on a heavy track (conceding his 7 rivals between 6.5-8kgs), Eremein (ridden by Dan Nikolic for trainer Allan Denham) defeated 6YO mare Lancaster Park (Arena-Dr Murray, by Dr Grace) & 5YO mare Beauty Watch (Belong To Me-Rush For Gold, by Quack). Geoff & Beryl White's home-bred Eremein was rated in the best 15 gallopers in the world by the International Federation Of Horseracing Authorities following his Gr1 treble during the 2006 Sydney autumn carnival (Gr1 Ranvet Stakes, Gr1 BMW & Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes); overall he now boasts 12 wins (also including the 2005 Gr1 AJC Derby & 2006 Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes) & 9 placings (including the 2006 Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes & Gr2 Hill Stakes, plus the 2007 Gr2 Apollo Stakes) from 27 starts for $4,260,445 earnings. Casner-Jackson Split Over Industry Reform
WinStar Farm co-owner Bill Casner "has resigned from Jess Jackson's Horse Owners Protective Association, the non-profit corporation Casner helped found with Jackson & Three Chimneys Farm owner Robert Clay in January of 2006," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Casner (who resigned hours after Jackson released a 7-page statement highly critical of recommendations made by the Sales Integrity Task Force) commented: "I still agree in spirit with the goals of the HOPA, but I just couldn't in good conscience live with the accusations Jess made. He categorically impugned the integrity of everyone on that task force & to me that was so unfair, just unthinkable." The task force (a group of 36 Kentucky industry players) was asked by the Kentucky legislature "to develop consensus on licensing of bloodstock agents & disclosure of ownership, medication & surgical information in the sales arena". Both Casner & Jackson were on the task force & Casner supported its recommendations (which include a 45-day ban on anabolic steroids, a code of conduct for bloodstock agents & voluntary disclosure of ownership & medical information). Casner summed up: "The task force members worked together in good faith & devoted a tremendous amount of time to the cause. The decisions & recommendations the task force made - that Keeneland & Fasig-Tipton have supported - will have huge implications for the industry. I think the work that came out of this task force was excellent. Was it perfect? Of course not, but we'll continue to work towards a more confident & equitable marketplace; that will be a never ending quest." (Oct 22)

Jackson Slams Sales Task Force Recommendations
Following this week's presentation of the keenly-awaited preliminary recommendations from the US Sales Integrity Task Force (aimed at self-regulation for the equine auction industry) high profile owner-breeder & panel member Jess Jackson ("the driving force behind Kentucky legislation seeking reform in the public selling arena") has responded with a "terse 7-page written response to the recommendations" claiming the task force was "manipulated" by an unbalanced consortium, reported bloodhorse.com. The recommendations (developed over 7-months by the 36-member task force) provide "suggested regulatory guidelines for owner transparency, agent licensing & medical disclosures". Critics had already noted the task force (featuring representation from the buying, selling & operational segments of the auction industry) "was unbalanced in favor of consignors & agents". Now Jackson (while praising the efforts of a few on the task force, in particular officials with Fasig-Tipton & Keeneland) declared: "The tragedy is that the task force effort has been manipulated & essentially hijacked from the very start by a handful of individuals. These individuals successfully manipulated the subcommittees & the larger task force in such a way as to advance their own agenda & derail any effort at meaningful & serious sales integrity reform. The membership of the task force was selected in secret by a group of individuals & entities who had previously publicly opposed the tabled legislation & are, purposefully or not, responsible for & profiting from the current & historical sales integrity problems in this industry." Jackson revealed in particular that votes on all the recommendations were held at times he could not attend & noted: "Any assertion the task force unanimously approved these recommendations should be tempered with the fact that the vote was taken in my absence & I would have voted NO on each recommendation." Jackson highlighted a voluntary ownership registry as a "toothless gesture" & said: "The legislation sought to disclose the true ownership of the horse to prevent the gamesmanship & deceitful shell-game tactics that injure not only the appearance of integrity but the actual integrity of the sales arena." The task force is now accepting written opinions on its recommendations (until October 31) & will then finalise its recommendations by early November & submit them to the Kentucky legislature by a Decembver 31 deadline. 5 UK 2YOs Return To Ring After Owner Fails To Pay
Also in UK news, 5 2YO colts "who together fetched 166,000 guineas (A$432,000) at the Doncaster Bloodstock Breeze-Up Sale in April, are to be re-offered in the same arena next month after a local businessman failed to pay for them," reported racingpost.co.uk. Former owner Ian Clark bought 4 of the youngsters in his own name: the most expensive was a 45,000 guineas (A$117,000) Spartacus colt out of French winner Bridelina. The 5th (by leading 1st-season sire Acclamation) was knocked down to trainer Richard Fahey for 44,000 guineas (A$114,000), but transferred to Clark (founder of family firm Linroyale Potatoes) on the day of the sale. DBS managing director Henry Beeby said: "Ian Clark bought the horses in good faith at the breeze-up sale. He has bought horses before, but has got himself into a little bit of difficulty & although he has paid some money, he has decided to sell the lot to clear the debt. He has promised to make up any shortfall, if there is one & it's a simple case of over-stretching himself, I think." (Jul 25)

Lomar Park's stallion Arena (Danehill-Lee's Bid, by Tawfiq) added another major Gr1 Group success when filly Rena's Lady (Arena-Boisterous Lady, by Rivotious) won yesterday's $660,000 Gr1 AJC Oaks (2400m) for 3YO fillies at Randwick. The victory was her 2nd in 5 days, following her win last Saturday in the $150,000 Gr3 Adrian Knox Quality Stakes (2000m) for fillies at Randwick. The Adrian Knox is often a good pointer for the Oaks, and so it turned out, with Perfect Drop (Quest For Fame-Dane Vintage, by Danzero) again forced to chase the winner home. Michael Rodd, riding Rena's Lady for trainer Gary Portelli, rode a brilliant race by slowing the pace down and forcing backmarking favourites Tuesday Joy (Carnegie-Joie Denise, by Danehill) and Banc De Fortune to attempt to come from behind on a track which left a lot of runners on the day floundering. Tuesday Joy's class allowed her to just snatch 3rd. The win took Rena's Lady's overall record to 3 wins and 3 placings from 19 starts for earnings of $505,570. (Apr 12)

Muzzafar Yaseen of Teeley Assets had watched his impeccably bred filly Sliding Cube win the Listed AJC Keith Mackay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick yesterday afternoon (see report above), and the breeder of Redoute's Choice ventured into the sales arena last night to secure Lot 278 with a winning bid of $625,000. By Encosta de Lago, the filly is out of Gr1 SAJC Australasian Oaks winner La Volta, whose 1st 3 foals to race have all won. (Apr 12)

Inglis Easter Day 1: $1.4m Elusive Quality-Blue Quail Colt
Prior to the sale big things had been predicted for the progeny of Darley's emerging shuttle stallion Elusive Quality (Gone West-Touch Of Greatness, by Hero's Honor), and the victory last Saturday of Camarilla (Elusive Quality-Camarena, by Danehill) in the Gr1 Sires Produce Stakes provided buyers with the necessary confidence to go to the next level. Tim Stakemire (Australian agent for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum) paid $1.4 million for Lot 79, an Elusive Quality colt out of Blue Quail, a Bluebird full-sister to dual Gr1-winning mare Flitter, and a grand-daughter of Gr1 VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner Outward Bound. The filly was consigned by Haunui Farm of New Zealand. (Apr 11)

Elusive Quality Bags Fourth Winner
Darley's freshman Australian shuttler Elusive Quality (Gone West-Touch Of Greatness, by Hero's Honor) brought up his 4th individual Australian winner from his debut season yesterday at Murray Bridge in South Australia, reported breednet.com.au. Making his debut for trainer Peter Jolly, Giant Killer (Elusive Quality-Serein, by Snippets) won over 900m, and will add to the demand for Elusive Quality's 22 progeny set to go under the hammer at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale starting next Tuesday in Sydney. Adding further interest ahead of the sale for Elusive Quality vendors, John Hawkes will saddle up stakes-winning Elusive Quality filly Camarilla (Elusive Quality-Camarena, by Danehill) for Woodlands Stud in Saturday's Gr1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. Elusive Quality is best known for the exploits of his brilliant US son Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality-I'll Get Along, by Smile) whose 8 wins from 9 starts included two legs of the US Triple Crown for 3YOs, and who was the first unbeaten Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977.
