Also in the UK, 27-year-old stallion Green Desert (Danzig-Foreign Courier, by Sir Ivor) "is likely to remain in service at Nunnery Stud next year, but will be restricted to a limited number of private mares" reported racingpost.com. Green Desert stood for £25,000 (A$43,000) in 2009, but "has never covered very large books or shuttled during his 24-year stud career at Nunnery Stud". He is still "reported to be in good shape & proved that age was no barrier this season by getting 9 mares of a restricted book of mares in-foal". And as long as he remains "happy & well, the plan is to allow him to cover a number of mares belonging to the Maktoum family in 2011". Green Desert (sire of 12 Gr1-winners) "has been successful throughout his stud career, starting when he was crowned leading 1st-season sire of 1990". Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Estates racing manager Angus Gold paid the Day-4 top price of 250,000 guineas (A$475,000) for a colt by former European Champion 1st Season Sire & Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit (out of King’s Best mare Liscune) consigned by Bryanstown House Stud in Ireland. The colt’s yearling half-sister was bought for €200,000 (A$360,000) John Ferguson at Deauville in August & Gold told racingpost.com the colt will head to Derrinstown Stud in Ireland “to mature before going into training” & noted: “He was a cracking colt & of what I've seen he was the standout of the day. The sire has done great & I think the mare is going to turn out to be decent, because her Oasis Dream yearling was for me the standout filly at Deauville this year. The colt had a lovely pedigree & seemed to have a great attitude.”

Further Cuts To 2009 Irish National Stud Fees
A month after announcing its 2009 sire fees, the Irish National Stud confirmed further reductions to the service fees for many of its stallions. As a result its flagship offering, the former European Champion 1st Season Sire & Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit, has now had his fee reduced by 33%: from €75,000 last season to €60,000 a month ago & now €50,000 for 2009. Dublin-based bloodstock agent Peter Doyle out-bid Willie Browne & paid 110,000 guineas (A$275,000) for a colt by former European Champion 1st Season Sire & Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit (the 1st foal out of unraced Galileo mare Starlit Sky) consigned from Heather Raw's Shoreham Stud. The colt's dam Starlit Sky is out of Champion racemare Starlet & is a 3/4 sister to French Gro2 Prix de Pomone winner Interlude, as well as to Success Story (dam of the Listed-winning brothers National Park & Film Script). Doyle told racingpost.co.uk: "I've bought him for a client to resell next year. The individual is what really counts, although of course it's also important that he's by a proven stallion. He was stabled a long way from the sale ring in the Solario Yard & although he may have been hidden away in the trees, I'm glad we found him!"

Laguna Salada (ridden by Daniele Porcu for trainer Roberto Feligioni) scored by a nose from Ars Nova (Barathea-Statokips, by Statoblest) with a further nose to Miss Pidwid (Straight Man-Per Diem, by Kissin Kris). Previously this year Laguna Salada also finished 2nd in July's Listed Premio Gino Mantovani (1500m) at San Siro & 3rd in June's Listed Premio Vittorio Crespi (1200m) at San Siro. Invincible Spirit Adds UK Gr2
Former European Champion 1st Season Sire & Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit (Green Desert-Rafha, by Kris) added a UK juvenile group success when Irish-bred daughter Madame Trop Vite (Invincible Spirit-Gladstone Street, by Waajib) finished fast from the rear of the field to gain the verdict against her male rivals in a 3-way photo-finish to the £80,000 (A$168,000) Gr2 Flying Childers Stakes (5 furlongs) for 2YOs at Doncaster. Madame Trop Vite (ridden by Ted Durcan for trainer Kevin Ryan) scored by a neck from Irish-bred filly Anglezarke (Acclamation-Welsh Mist, by Damister) with a further head to US-bred filly Mythical Border (Johannesburg-Border Dispute, by Boundary). Madame Trop Vite was a 24,000 guineas (A$53,000) purchase at the Doncaster St Leger Sale. Last month she also won the UK Listed St Hugh's Stakes (5 furlongs) at Newbury & overall now has 3 wins & a runner-up from 6 starts for £71,533 (A$150,000) earnings.

Kheleyf Odds-On For UK Record 1st-Season
Boom Darley 7YO freshman stallion Kheleyf (Green Desert-Society Lady, by Mr Prospector) "has been slashed to 2-5 (from 5-4) with Cashmans to break the record for the number of 1st-crop winners sired in Britain & Ireland," reported racingpost.co.uk. Kheleyf has notched 22 individual winners (from 49 runners) & "that puts him within sight of the record held by Invincible Spirit, who sired 28 winners (34 world-wide) in 2006". At the corresponding stage in his successful year, former Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit (Green Desert-Rafha, by Kris) had recorded 26 winners. Dual Gr1-winning fellow Darley stallion & last season's Australian champion 1st-crop sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) lies in 2nd place with 17 winners (from 46 runners). 1st Rakti Yearlings Sell at Deauville
Meanwhile the 1st yearlings by Chatswood Stud's 6-time Gr1-winning sire Rakti (Polish Precedent-Ragera, by Rainbow Quest) were offered at the weekend's Arqana Deauville Sale in France. The results included: a filly out of Medaaly mare Tocopilla purchased for €130,000 ($A221,000); & a filly out of Silver Hawk mare Cornelia for €85,000 ($A144,500). Rakti is standing the 2008 season at Chatswood for $19,250.
