Arrowfield Freshman All American Shuttle To US
Arrowfield Stud announced Gr1-winning & dual Gr1-placed 5YO freshman sire All American (Red Ransom-Milva, by Strawberry Road) will shuttle to Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky for the 2011 northern hemisphere breeding season. All American (who posted the fastest time ever recorded by an entire for 1600m at Flemington when he defeated 6 Gr1-winners to win the 2009 Gr1 Emirates Stakes in 1min 33.98sec) will be the 1st Australian stallion to shuttle to the US, after Darby Dan owner John Phillips visited Arrowfield earlier this week “to inspect All American & conclude the shuttle agreement”. Arrowfield chairman John Messara enthused: “When John (Phillips) approached us about shuttling All American, we were delighted because Darby Dan Farm bred & stood his paternal grandsire Roberto. John has a deep understanding of this great outcross sire-line & shares our faith in All American’s ability to transmit its best qualities.” Phillips added: “All American is sure to be significant, not because of my sentiment, but because of my familiarity with what makes this sire-line work. He is a Gr1-winner with credible 2YO performance, a turn of foot & a masculine balance with ample length of leg. As a sire & as a sire-line, Roberto has paid incredible dividends to us & others who have supported him. Sadly, breeders lost some promising Roberto-line sire candidates like Barbaro (by Dynaformer) & our own Coshocton (by Silver Hawk), which makes the opportunity to be a part of All American especially attractive. As far as I am concerned, the sky is the limit for All American. Darby Dan is excited to participate in his stud career with Arrowfield & the All American Syndicate & we intend to make him a global success.” All American is standing his 1st southern hemisphere season in 2010 at Arrowfield, for $16,500 & his 2011 US fee will be announced by Darby Dan shortly. On the track, All American (a $220,000 yearling consigned by Strawberry Hill Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) recorded 4 wins (including 2009’s Gr1 Emirates Stakes over 1600m at Flemington, plus 2008’s Gr3 Skyline Stakes over 1200m at Randwick & 2007’s Listed St Albans Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley) & 5 placings (including 2009’s Gr2 Patinack Farm Crystal Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley & Listed Aurie's Star Handicap over 1200m at Flemington, plus 2008’s Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1200m at Flemington, Gr1 Arrowfield Stud Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield & Gr2 Bill Stutt Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley) from 24 starts for $1,269,415 earnings. Gainesway Owner Graham Beck Dies At 80
South African winemaker & leading international breeder Graham Beck, who bought major Kentucky stud Gainesway Farm in 1989, has died in London overnight at age 80, reported Bloomberg News. Under the Beck family’s ownership, Gainesway “has built on the foundation established by the late John Gaines (an early adapter of the stallion station concept) & in addition to the original Gainesway, the farm now totals more than 1500 acres, including the former Greentree & Whitney farms,” noted bloodhorse.com. US National Thoroughbred Racing Association chief executive Alex Waldrop commented: “The thoroughbred industry lost an immensely accomplished & respected figure today in Graham Beck & the world lost a renowned businessman & philanthropist whose reach extended around the globe.” Among the star gallopers bred by Gainesway (individually or in partnership) have been champion sprinter & former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Orientate, Gr1-winners Joyeux Danseur & Careless Jewel, Gr2-winner Vengelis & Gr3-winners Hidden Assets, Daiwa Bandit, Drilling For Oil, Silent Roar, Windrush, Redding Colliery, Mauk Four & Touching Beauty. As owner (individually & in partnership) Gainesway has raced Gr1-winners Timber Country (former Arrowfield Stud & later Eliza Park Stud shuttler) & Firm Stance, plus Gr3-winners Afleet Express, Touching Beauty, Windrush, Effectual & Hightap. And Gainesway’s current star-studded stallion roster includes Mr Greeley (former Victorian shuttler), Tapit, Birdstone, Corinthian, Afleet Alex, Smoke Glacken, Orientate, Cuvee, J Be K & Whywhywhy. Beck also owned Highlands Farm in South Africa & stud manager Mike Sharkey told sahorseracing.com: “Racing has lost a doyen. How can you replace a man like that? He will leave a huge gap.” (Jul 28)

Also in the UK, trainer Michael Jarvis confirmed he "is considering" aiming his exciting Australian-bred 2YO colt Elzaam (Redoute's Choice-Mambo In Freeport, by Kingmambo) at the Gr2 July Stakes at Newmarket on July 8, reported racingpost.com. Elzaam was bred by Kia Ora Stud in Australia (to northern hemisphere time) in January 2008 & sold at the 2009 Arqana August Sale to Shadwell France for €280,000 (A$406,000). Elzaam (the 1st member of flagship Arrowfield Stud stallion & former Australian Champion Sire Redoute's Choice's initial northern time crop to race) made his debut on May 13 at York in England, leading all-the-way to win over 6 furlongs. Elzaam then finished 2nd by a nose in last week's Gr2 Coventry Stakes (6 furlongs) at Royal Ascot. Jarvis noted: "He's come out his run at Royal Ascot in great shape & I was very pleased with his performance there. It was a high-class renewal of the Coventry Stakes & he ran a super race. He was out in front for quite a long time & he did start to look around a bit in the last half-furlong. . . . . I think if Elzaam hadn't idled a little bit in front, then we might have won. He was only having his 2nd start & we were very happy with him - he is a decent horse." (Jun 24)
