Deauville Yearlings Day-1: $1.02m Kingmambo Filly
Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock manager John Ferguson paid €600,000 (A$1.02m) for a filly by Lane's End Farm stallion Kingmambo (out of stakes-placed Sadler's Wells mare Helena Molony) consigned from Newsells Park Stud. The filly's dam Helena Molony is a full-sister to both multiple Gr1-winning Coolmore stallion High Chaparral & this year's UK Gr2-winner Black Bear Island (who also finished runner-up in the previous weekend's US Gr1 Secretariat Stakes). Ferguson commented: "She could be anything. Obviously, she has an outstanding pedigree & such opportunities to buy such a well-bred filly are rare." (Aug 17)

US Turf Champion To Lane's End
Also in the US, that country's 2007 champion turf male, 7YO English Channel (Smart Strike-Belva, by Theatrical), "has been relocated to Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, for the 2010 breeding season," reports thoroughbredtimes.com. English Channel recorded 13 wins from 23 starts for US$5,319,028 with his career highlights including the Gr1 trio of the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf, United Nations Stakes & Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes. Having just completed the 2009 season at Hurricane Hall at a fee of US$25,000, Lane's End principal Will Farish commented: "We are pleased that Brad Kelley has decided to have champion English Channel join his sire Smart Strike and his son Curlin at Lane's End." In his debut season English Channel "proved to be remarkably fertile, getting 90% of his 151 mares in foal." (Jul 16)

US 2YO Champ War Pass Retired To Stud
US multiple Gr1-winning 3YO colt War Pass (last year's unbeaten Eclipse Award-winning champion 2YO male) who was injured in April this year "has been retired to stud to William Farish's Lane's End Farm in Kentucky," reported bloodhorse.com. Kentucky-bred War Pass (Cherokee Run-Vue, by Mr Prospector) was a US$180,000 yearling at the 2006 Keeneland September sale & led at every call in 4 successive victories as a 2YO (including a 4.75-lengths in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile over 8.5 furlongs at Monmouth Park & Gr1 Champagne Stakes over 8 furlongs at Belmont Park). He was "high-weighted on the Experimental Free Handicap & earned the highest juvenile Beyer Speed Figure (113) ever recorded for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile." War Pass sustained a fractured left-front sesamoid after finishing runner-up in April's Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes (9 furlongs) at Aqueduct & retires with 5 wins from 7 starts for US$1,583,400 earnings. NY Yearlings Day-1: US$1.2m A.P.Indy Colt
Will Farish of Lane's End paid US$1.2 million for a colt by his farm's leading sire A.P.Indy already named Pyramid Indy (out of unraced 11-year-old Broad Brush mare Pyramid Lake) bred in Kentucky by Dream With Me Stables & consigned as agent by Hunter Valley Farm (founded in Kentucky in 2004 by partners Adrian Regan, Fergus Galvin, John Wade & Tony Hegarty). The colt's dam Pyramid Lake has produced 2 stakes-placed winners & is a half-sister to 1997 European Horse-Of-The-Year & former Coolmore shuttler Peintre Celebre. Farish told thoroughbredtimes.com: "He's a lovely individual, one of the best A.P.s I've seen at auction for a long time & he's from an outstanding female family that I've wanted to get into for years. I wasn't surprised at the price, but I've been surprised with a lot of these. I expected him to bring more." The colt (the highest-priced horse ever sold by Hunter Valley Farm) was previously entered in the 2007 Keeneland November breeding stock sale & listed as "reserve not attained" on a final bid of US$500,000. Hunter partner Galvin commented: "When we had him in last November, he was a big, raw, backward colt. That's why we reserved him so high. We were of 2 minds to bring him to the sale in the first place & we figured if we did, we were going to protect him. He's been a special colt from day one, a very classy horse. Lindsay Park Sire Alannan Sold To Vietnam
Lindsay Park Stud's 12-year-old stallion Alannan (a multiple Gr2 winner & Gr1-placed sprinter in the US, who smashed Distorted Humor's 7 furlongs track record at Churchill Downs & was rated 2nd highest-weighted sprinter world-wide for the colts of 1996) "has been sold to continue his stallion career at the newly established M'Drak Stud Farm in Vietnam," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Kentucky-bred Alannan (Conquistador Cielo-Dame Sybil, by Elocutionist) won both the US 2001 Gr2 Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes & Gr2 Lane's End Churchill Downs Handicap. In Dubai, Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy rode Godolphin's US$9.7 million 4YO entire Jalil (Storm Cat-Tranquility Lake, by Rahy) to a new track record for 1700m on dirt at Nad Al Sheba for trainer Saeed Bib Suroor. Harvey Trimble bought 10-year-old Storm Bird mare Moon Tide (out of Gr2-placed winning Highland Blade mare Highland Tide, a half-sister to both Gr1-winner & sire Super May, & multiple Gr3-winner & sire Ide) consigned by Lane's End Texas as agent for Stonerside Farm; Moon Tide has produced 2 winners (including stakes-winner Moon Kid).

3 Coolmore Sires Return To US
However Coolmore Australia confirmed 3 of its US-based shuttle stallions currently in the NSW Hunter Valley - Tale Of The Cat, Johannesburg & Lion Heart - "have been sent back to America to avert any chance of them being stranded in Australia at the end of the breeding season," reported breednet.com.au. Coolmore spokesman James Bester explained: "American importation rules insist that no horse can come into the country unless it has been on a disease free farm for at least 60 days prior. While Coolmore at Jerry's Plains is to this point free of equine influenza, it was regarded as a prudent decision to send some of the horses back to America." Coolmore was granted a special permit to move the horses to Sydney to board a waiting plane as the stud has been free from equine influenza, is outside any current restriction zone & the horses were not remaining in Australia. Coolmore Australia general manager Michael Kirwan added: "It was a compromise that had to be made for Ashford Farm in America. We're between a rock & a hard place. It's impossible to keep everyone happy, although in retaining Fusaichi Pegasus, Dehere & Royal Academy, we still have some high profile horses for Australian breeders. The Americans have Tale Of The Cat & his son Lion Heart, plus Johannesburg: so it's an even split, with 3 each." (Sep 18)

Australian-based software company G1 Racesoft announced international stud Coolmore has added all 52 sires to its new G1 Goldmine stallion module. G1 Racesoft chief executive Leo Tsatsaronis commented: "This is our 1st global agreement & validates our strategy of developing pedigree software with a global footprint." G1 Goldmine provides a highly-searchable pedigree database of graded stakes winners, with the software allowing extensive exploration of breeding patterns & lists by name, graded stakes-winners produced by the specified cross. Tsatsaronis said a good example is the Seattle Slew-Fappiano cross that has produced 13 graded stakes-winners in the past 16 years (almost half being Gr1 winners), whereas not a single graded stakes-winner has been produced in North America from any breeding combining 2 daughters of Northern Dancer. US Gr2-winning millionaire stallion Bowman's Band (Dixieland Band-Hometown Queen, by Pleasant Colony) "has been relocated to William Farish's Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, where he has joined his sire at stud," reported bloodhorse.com. Kingmambo Goes To Private Fee
In the US breeding barns, William Farish's Lane's End Farm "shook up its 2007 stallion roster, pensioning 17-year-old 1992 Gr1 Preakness Stakes winner Pine Bluff (273 winners & 29 stakes-winners from 373 starters among 525 foals in 11 crops of racing age for US$26,042,626 earnings) & changing the fees of 13 of its stallions (5 going up & 7 going down) & Kingmambo moving to a private fee after standing for US$300,000 in 2006," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Kingmambo (a 16-year-old Mr Prospector horse) has suffered from various physical problems (including arthritis in his neck) & was bred to only 36 mares in 2005 & 60 mares in 2006. Farish confirmed: "Kingmambo is doing very well physically & his fertility is good: he was right around 80% last year. At this point, we want to limit his book to around 60-70 mares. There's a lot of demand, but after the shareholders, we can only sell a few seasons, so we thought this was the right thing to do." A Kingmambo colt (out of Seattle Slew stakes-winning mare Crown Of Crimson) sold for US$11.7 million at the 2006 Keeneland September Yearling Sale (making him the 2nd highest-priced yearling of all time). Eurosilver To Dromoland Farm
Dromoland Farm in Lexington has "acquired multiple graded stakes-winner Eurosilver from breeder Buckram Oak Farm to launch its stallion operation & will stand the 4YO son of Unbridled's Song (out of Nijinksky II mare Russian Tango) for US$12,500 in the hope of attracting a big book of mares for its initial season as a stud farm," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Eurosilver won 4 of 12 starts & earned US$622,310; his highlights included victories in the Gr2 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity as a 2YO & Gr3 Skip Away Handicap as a 4YO "before being retired in August with a hairline fracture in the left hind leg". William Farish's home-bred 4YO mare Shadow Cast (Smart Strike-Daily Special, by Dayjur) won the US$400,000 Gr1 Personal Ensign Handicap (10 furlongs) for fillies & mares at Saratoga, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Shadow Cast (ridden by Robby Albarado for trainer Neil Howard) defeated 5YO mare Personal Legend (Awesome Again-Highland Legend, by Storm Bird) & front-running fellow 4YO mare Two Trail Sioux (Indian Charlie-Quiet Trail, by Quiet American); 5-time Gr1-winning 4YO mare (& last year's US champion 3YO filly) Ashado (Saint Ballado-Goulash, by Mari's Book) finished 4th. Kentucky-bred Shadow Cast now has 9 wins (also including Gr2 & Gr3 victories earlier this year) in 21 starts for US$923,751 earnings. From 6 crops, her sire Smart Strike (who stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky) has 181 winners from 244 runners & 33 stakes-winners (10 in 2005); "this is from 323 foals, so he is operating at the accepted 10% strike-rate of superior stallions," noted thoroughbredinternet.com.
