Danehill Dominates European 2YOs
A report by thoroughbredinternet.com has highlighted the extent to which Australian Champion Sire Danehill (Danzig-Razyana, by His Majesty) dominated the European 2YO division during 2005, with 3 in the top 8 (those weighted at 116 pounds or higher). George Washington and Horatio Nelson are both impeccably bred, and trained by Aidan O'Brien, it's not hard to imagine that they may ultimately find their way to Coolmore's Australian base as shuttlers. The leading 2005 European 2Y0s were:
  • 124 George Washington (Danehill) colt
  • 121 Sir Percy (Mark of Esteem) colt
  • 120 Amadeus Wolf (Mozart) colt
  • 120 Horatio Nelson (Danehill) colt
  • 117 Opera Cape (Barathea) colt
  • 117 Red Clubs (Red Ransom) colt

Call For Single UK Racing Channel
Meanwhile Brendan McDonald (part-owner of Amadeus Wolf) "used the prestigious Gimcrack dinner speech to call for a single dedicated racing channel & for the industry to try harder to attract young racegoers," reported racingpost.co.uk. McDonald (whose colt won the UK Gr2 sprint at York in August to earn the honour of addressing guests at the high-profile function) said a single, free-to-air racing channel is "important" & emphasised: "Both the dedicated racing channels do a good job, but a subscription racing channel will only ever appeal to the hardcore. We need to make all of British racing accessible to people with a casual, or an as yet undeveloped, interest in the game. Interactive betting through television is likely to take off in coming years as technology improves, & people will generally bet only on what they can see. If all they can see is football, golf & tennis, that is what they will bet on." (Dec 16)
