1st Foals For Dual Gr1-Winning Shuttler Mount Nelson
In the UK, the 1st foals by dual Gr1-winning 6YO stallion & Baerami Thoroughbreds shuttler Mount Nelson (Rock Of Gibraltar-Independence, by Selkirk) “are half-sisters to UK Gr1 1000 Guineas heroine Speciosa & Gr1 King's Stand Stakes scorer Equiano,” reported racingpost.com. Specifically (dam of Speciosa & also a half-sister to champion racemare Pride) gave birth to a filly & Equiano's dam Entente Cordiale also produced a filly. Mount Nelson (who covered 110 mares in 2009 in the Northern Hemisphere) “this year embarks on his 2nd covering season at Newsells Park Stud in Hertfordshire at a fee of £8,000 (A$14,400)”. As a 2YO in 2006, Mount Nelson won his maiden by 6-lengths & a week later added victory in France's Gr1 Criterium International (1600m) at Saint-Cloud, setting a new course record. He finished his juvenile season with an official rating of 119 (4th highest in Europe). A foot injury marred his 3YO season, but he returned in 2008 to win the UK Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) at Sandown & then finish 3rd in the US Gr1 Arlington Million Stakes (10 furlongs on turf) at Arlington Park in his final race. Mount Nelson Fee Cut 20% At UK Newsells Park
Also in the UK, Newsells Park Stud has reduced the 2010 stud fee for dual Gr1-winning stallion & Baerami Thoroughbreds shuttler Mount Nelson (Rock Of Gibraltar-Independence, by Selkirk) by 20%: from £10,000 (A$18,000) in his 1st-season in 2009 to £8,000 (A$14,400) for his 2nd-season. On the track, Mount Nelson (half-brother to this season's UK Gr1 Great Voltigeur Stakes winner & Gr1 St Leger 3rd-placed Monitor Closely) won France's Gr1 Criterium International (1600m) at Saint-Cloud (setting a new course record & finishing his juvenile season with an official rating of 119, 4th highest in Europe) & the UK Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) at Sandown, plus 3rd in the US Gr1 Arlington Million Stakes (10 furlongs) at Arlington Park; he retired with 3 wins & 3 placings from 9 starts for £459,137 (A$826,000) earnings. Newsells Park general manager Julian Dollar told racingpost.com: “Mount Nelson received fantastic support in his 1st season at stud. Breeders from all over Europe have given him every chance of making a great start when his 1st 2YOs start running in 2012. We recognise, however, the need for a further readjustment in stud fees & Mount Nelson's 20% drop reflects this. We feel he offers breeders great value at £8,000 (A$14,400) especially considering the book of mares breeders in 2010 will be following, almost 50% of whom were black-type performers or producers.” (Nov 13)

UK Gr1-Winner Mount Nelson To Stand At Baerami
Denman-based Baerami Thoroughbreds in the NSW Hunter Valley announced it will stand dual European Gr1-winning 5YO stallion Mount Nelson (Rock Of Gibraltar-Independence, by Selkirk) for the 2009 stud season at $16,500 "after a deal was brokered by Heritage Bloodstock between Baerami & England's Newsells Park Stud". Baerami principal Paul Higgins enthused Mount Nelson (as a son of proven shuttler Rock Of Gibraltar & from a Gr2-winner) is "perfect for the Australian racing environment" & "bred on the proven Danehill/Sharpen Up cross that is carried by one of Australia's leading stallions in Danehill Dancer". Higgins added: "We are always reticent to get overly excited about the numerous shuttle prospects we are offered. There are so many more factors that need to be taken into account than the bald facts of racing form. Precociousness, racing styles, surface appreciation, physical attributes, pedigree suitability, durability etc all need to be analysed & on all of these fronts Mount Nelson fits the bill. We have had very good success with the progeny of shuttle stallions in the past because we have very strict guidelines of what attributes we look for in them & then how we can couple that together with the local broodmare population. For us, not standing a horse like Mount Nelson was never an option as we feel his credentials to suit Australia outweigh virtually every shuttle stallion coming this year." As a 2YO in 2006, Mount Nelson won his maiden by 6-lengths & a week later added victory in France's Gr1 Criterium International (1600m) at Saint-Cloud, setting a new course record. Baerami Extends Colonial Sire Books
Baerami Thoroughbreds announced it "will be extending the numbers that each of its stallions will be allowed to cover, in an effort to assist affected broodmare owners". Principal Paul Higgins said Baerami (a farm that specialises in colonial horses & does not stand any shuttle sires) was verging on closing the books for several of its stallions "but will make more nominations available. While we will not be taking excessive numbers to any of our stallions, we are aware that if we can assist broodmare owners who find themselves in a compromised position we should do all that we can. Danasinga & California Dane were both closing in on the book-full sign being posted; however we will marginally extend their books if we can help." (Aug 28)

California Dane Coup For Baerami
Baerami Thoroughbreds delivered a coup overnight when announcing 4YO entire California Dane (Danehill-Storminwinter, by Seattle Slew) will make his stud debut at their Hunter Valley property this season. Purchased by Baerami principal Paul Higgins, California Dane has been immediately retired in preparation for the 2007 season. In an industry where the term "blazingly fast" is tossed around lightly, California Dane was the real deal, sweeping to 5 successive victories which included a track record at Moonee Valley, and a stunning win in the Gr2 WFA Carlyon Stakes (1200m) in which he defeated the flying Virage De Fortune (sold for $3.4 million last Sunday at the Inglis Select Broodmare Sale) and Spark Of Life. In so doing, California Dane became one of only 2 horses ever to defeated Virage De Fortune (a Gr1 winner at her next start) at Moonee Valley, the other being multiple Gr1 winner Miss Andretti. "I don't think there has been a faster son of Danehill which for us is his most attractive feature," said Higgins. "He was for a time nearly unbeatable at 1200m. His first foray at Stakes level saw him start odds-on against some of the best sprinters in this country and triumph. Strangely, very few sons of Danehill have tasted success at WFA as 3YOs - in fact Redoute's Choice and California Dane are the only two to have done it at 1200m. You can add to this California Dane and Fastnet Rock being the only two Danehill sons to have won WFA races at 1000m. Class and precocity when coupled with pedigree and conformation should equal stud success." California Dane is the 1st foal of the superbly bred Seattle Slew mare Storminwinter.  She is from the immediate family of Champion US Sires Broad Brush and Capote. California Dane will stand for the GST inclusive fee of $11,000, and some shares will be sold to breeders. (Apr 20)

Close Murtajill Relation Foaled At Baerami
The win by 2YO colt Murtajill (Rock of Gibraltar-Skating, by At Talaq) in last weekend's Listed Breeders Plate has added a spring to the step of long time Baerami Thoroughbreds client Greg Rayner of Rayner Bloodstock. Prior to the stakes wins of Skating's talented trio of Bradbury's Luck, Sunset Run & Murtajill, Rayner purchased Bobsleigh (in foal to More Than Ready), a Palace Music half-sister to Murtajill's dam Skating. Following the record $660,000 Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum paid for Murtajill at the 2005 Magic Millions June National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast, Rayner sent Bobsleigh to Rock Of Gibraltar. The resultant 3/4 brother to Murtajill "is an exceptional individual in its own right." A brown colt who appears destined to be grey, he "received the on-farm rating of 8 which is reserved for about the top 5% of foals born on type." It is expected that Bobsleigh will be served next by Baerami's exciting South American stallion Star Cross (Southern Halo-Other Star, by Logical). (Oct 5)

Baerami Thoroughbreds in the NSW Hunter Valley is waiting for the birth of a foal this season whose pedigree is truly world class. By exciting resident Danehill stallion Danasinga (Danehill-Princess Tracy, by Ahonoora), the foal's dam is Emerald (El Gran Senor-Razyana, by His Majesty). Emerald is a half-sister to multiple champion sire Danehill, thus giving the foal a very close-up double of Razyana, herself out of a half-sister to Northern Dancer. Emerald currently has a Rhythm yearling colt. In addition to Danasinga, in 2006 Baerami is also standing Universal Prince, Star Cross & Murphy's Blu Boy. (Sep 14)

Ishiguru Leads UK 1st-Crop Race
Meanwhile NZ Chequers Stud's 1st season sire Ishiguru (Danzig-Strategic Manuever, by Cryptoclearance) "is currently the leading 1st-Season sire in Britain by progeny earnings & is also the 3rd overall 1st-Season sire in Europe" (the 2 ranked higher covered more than twice the number of mares) noted NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Ishiguru's leading northern hemisphere performer is Hellvelyn (winner of the UK Gr2 Coventry Stakes & runner-up in Ireland's Gr1 Phoenix Stakes, both over 6 furlongs). Ishiguru's 1st NZ crop will be offered for sale at the 2007 NZ Bloodstock Yearling Sales at Karaka; he also shuttled to Baerami Thoroughbreds in the NSW Hunter Valley for a season & his 1st crop of Australian-bred foals will be 2YOs this season. Murphy's Blu Boy (who notched 5 wins & 2 runner-ups from 11 starts) stands at Paul & Petajane Higgins' Baerami Thoroughbreds in the NSW Hunter Valley for $5,500. (Aug 24)

Danehill Star Chip Off The Block
At Camden on Sydney's southern outskirts, Tariqa Park's Cathy Cattell is excited about the 2006 season. Tariqa stands Danehill Star (Danehill-Princess Tracy, by Ahonoora) whose 1st crop will officially become 2YOs next week, having sold to $28,000 at this year's Magic Millions sales. A multiple city winner (out of internationally-performed sprinting mare Princess Tracy), Danehill Star is a full-brother to exciting Baerami Thoroughbreds Gr1 winner & successful stallion Danasinga. His full & half-siblings to either win or place in Gr1 events or produce Gr1 winners & place-getters number an astonishing 8 individuals. Standing for just $5,500, Cattell is realistic about the competitive nature of the market & is prepared to "negotiate with breeders" despite the fact Danehill Star's sisters had progeny sell at this year's Inglis Easter Sale for up to $2 million. Danasinga Versatility Highlighted
Gr1-winning sire Danasinga (Danehill-Princess Tracy, by Ahonoora) who served his 1st Australian season at Baerami Thoroughbreds in 2005, has had another stellar week with his 3YO runners: gelded son Eskimo Dan (Danasinga-Silver Eskimo) added a metropolitan victory by 2.25-lengths over 1500m at Eagle Farm in Brisbane; fellow gelding Danacolada (Danasinga-Pina Colada) also added a metropolitan victory when scoring by 1650m at Belmont Park in Perth; & filly Sable (Danasinga-Trisha's Belle) won by 2.25-lengths over 2200m Arawa Park in New Zealand. Danasinga's versatility is also emphasised by the fact he is in the Top 10 on the NZ 2YO sire list & also prominent on the Hong Kong sire list. Overall this season Danasinga boasts 7 individual stakes horses (including 2 at Gr1 level). Baerami principal Paul Higgins summed up: "Versatility really is the key to Danasinga. He has a top Gr1 2YO in NZ, an array of exciting 3YOs in Australia & it took the Horse-Of-The-Year to beat 4YO Danacourt at Gr1 level in HK." Meanwhile at the 2006 sales, Danasinga's yearlings sold up to $320,00. Danasinga is again standing at Baerami this season at $16,500. (Jun 30)

No Lover's Fool At Millions Perth
Meanwhile in Western Australia, 3YO filly No Lover's Fool (by Baerami Thoroughbreds stallion Danasinga, out of Centaine mare Centolde) attracted plenty of attention with a 3.25-lengths victory in her racetrack debut over 1400m at Pinjarra. She will now go through the auction ring at the Magic Millions Key Farm Dispersal Sale in Perth on April 1; & if things go to plan for her current owner, No Lover's Fool will be running in the Gr2 WA Oaks at Ascot earlier that afternoon. Trainer Michael Pateman confirmed: "She'll most likely have her next start in the Natasha Stakes this weekend & then go into the Oaks. I don't doubt her ability to win an Oaks. She is a real stayer of the future. If she could win the Oaks at her 3rd start, it would be an amazing achievement." (Mar 15)

Portland Singa At Millions Broodmare Sale
Meanwhile Gr1-winning 6YO staying mare Portland Singa (Danasinga-State Of Oregon, by Oregon) has also been entered for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast in June. Portland Singa (retired after damaging a sesamoid in last Saturday's Gr2 Apollo Stakes at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney) boasts 8 wins & 14 placings in 41 starts for $1,016,550 prize-money; her highlights include victories in the 2005 Gr1 Brisbane Cup (3200m), 2004 Gr3 Ipswich Cup (2150m) & 2004 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) plus placings in 4 other black-type events & a courageous 6th behind Australia's greatest stayer Makybe Diva in her historic 3rd Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) win last November. Keeneland Day-1: US$1.25 Million New Dice
Courtlandt farm proprietor Don Adam also paid US$1.25 million for 6YO Capote mare New Dice (a half-sister to Gr2 winner Daydreaming & Gr3 winner Accelerator) reported thoroughbredtimes.com. New Dice is out of Mr Prospector mare Get Lucky (a full sister to champion 2YO male & Baerami Thoroughbreds stallion Rhythm) & was sold in foal to Mineshaft. Courtlandt manager Ernie Retamoza commented: "We thought it was a wonderful family. She's a big strong mare & we see a lot of potential there." New Dice is also a half-sister to She's A Winner (dam of Gr2 winner Lord Of The Game); 2nd dam Dance Number (a Gr1 winner) also produced stakes-placed sire Not For Love & Oscillate (dam of sire Mutakddim) & Dance Number is a half-sister to Gr1 winner & successful sire Private Account. Westbury Sire Cullen Euthanased
NZ Westbury Stud-based 9YO sire Cullen (Danehill-Princess Tracy, by Ahonoora) "has had to be put down after developing complications from a high temperature," reported NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Westbury general manager Russell Warwick confirmed: "A number of vets have made a concerted effort over the past week to get the horse over his complications. But he deteriorated to a degree where the veterinary team were left with no choice other than to euthanase him. It is very sad to see the horse meet such a premature end just when his oldest crop, now 3YOs, have really started to hit their straps & he has had 6 individual 3YO winners this season. Everyone at Westbury Stud is devastated by the loss of such an exciting stallion prospect." Cullen's own wins included the Gr3 Blue Diamond Preview & Gr3 Rubiton Stakes in Australia, plus runner-up in the NZ Gr1 Railway Handicap & 3rd in Australia's Gr2 Pago Pago Stakes. Cullen is a full brother to the successful Baerami Thoroughbreds-based stallion Danasinga & a half-brother to Little Avondale Stud's promising stallion Towkay. (Nov 7)

Rhythm Arrives At Baerami
Baerami Thoroughbreds shuttler & US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Rhythm (Mr Prospector-Dance Number, by Northern Dancer) has arrived back in Australia for his 3rd season & is presently in quarantine prior to transportation to the Denman-based stud in the NSW Hunter Valley. Baerami's Paul Higgins noted Rhythm is "coming off another season full of Gr1 results" & enthused: "Gr1 racing is what it's all about & Rhythm is 1 of the few stallions in Australia who can consistently throw that class of galloper. He produces a Gr1 horse-to-runner ratio that virtually no Southern Hemisphere horse can get near." (Aug 30)

1st 2005 Foal At Baerami
Baerami Thoroughbreds in the Hunter Valley has celebrated the birth of its 1st 2005 foal. Out of maiden mare Markedly Absent (Marquetry-Centaine's Gift, by Centaine), who attempted to go through her maiden delivery on her own, the Baerami team supervised the birth of "a handsome bay colt by resident stallion Rhythm." Principal Paul Higgins commented: "He is very typical of what we see with so many Rhythm foals; a good size, correct and straight, yet built with a sprinter's mould." Unraced, Markedly Absent is a half-sister to the ultra consistent Bruce McLachlan-trained sprinter Presently and also to Another Time, runner-up in the 2005 Black Opal Stakes at Canberra. Another half sister, by More Than Ready, sold for $180,000 to Paul Perry from the Broadwater Farm draft at this year's Inglis Classic Sale in Sydney. High profile sire Rhythm (Mr Prospector-Dance Number, by Northern Dancer) again returns to Baerami for the 2005 season where he will stand at $11,000. (Aug 5)

Universal Appeal At Baerami
In the NSW Hunter Valley, the strong appeal of locally performed young stallions appears to be working in favour of Universal Prince (Scenic-Biscay Bird, by Bluebird) at Denman-based Baerami Thoroughbreds. By the best Australian performed sire-son of Sadler's Wells, Universal Prince's popularity can also be attributed to his brilliant form on Australian tracks (4 Gr1 wins & stakes earnings approaching $3 million). Sharing an identical relational pattern to that enjoyed by this season's 200+ win sire stars Encosta de Lago & Flying Spur, Universal Prince's dam is a half-sister to Kambula Stud's dual Gr1 winner & highly proven sire Blevic (also by Scenic). Standing his 1st season at Baerami in 2005, Universal Prince's progeny are expected to be keenly sought by local trainers familiar with his high profile on the racetrack. (Jul 22)

Baerami Recruit Arrives
Blue-blooded Baerami Thoroughbreds stallion recruit Danasinga (Danehill-Princess Tracy, by Ahonoora) has arrived at the Hunter Valley property of Paul and Petajane Higgins. Commenting on his arrival, Paul Higgins noted, "He arrived in terrific order from Waikato Stud and has such a relaxed nature that on the first morning he just wandered out of his box into his new yard and went off grazing." The highest priced Danehill of his year, the Gr1 winner (whose daughter Portland Singa recently won at Gr1 level) has met with an immediate and overwhelming response. "He already has 100 mares booked," declared Higgins, "and we will have to close his book at some stage soon." Baerami's policy of "sourcing stallions that have proven themselves under Southern Hemisphere conditions," is paying strong dividends, with Rhythm (Mr Prospector-Dance Number, by Northern Dancer) a standout example whose progeny continue to perform at the highest level. Blu Boy At Baerami
One time boom 2YO Murphy's Blu Boy (Blu Tusmani-Murphy's Arch, by Archregent) will make his stud debut in 2005 at Paul & Petajane Higgins' Baerami Thoroughbreds. The Hunter Valley operation, already flush with success after securing Universal Prince, Star Cross and Danasinga as 'new sires' for 2005, is offering Murphy's Blu Boy to breeders at $5,500 including GST. Simply from word of mouth at this point, the beautifully conformed sprinter is attracting unprecedented interest. A 5-time winner from less than a dozen starts, Murphy's Blu Boy became a 2YO pin-up after making it 4 wins from 4 starts when winning the Gr3 MRC Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield by 7 lengths. Despite being injured during running and twisting a plate during the subsequent Gr3 MRC Blue Diamond Prelude, the colt still managed to finish runner-up. Plagued by ongoing injury problems, the debutant sire, who boasts Gr1 Cox Plate heroine Dane Ripper in his pedigree, was also successful in the Lightning Handicap at Gosford. (Jul 12)

Southern Halo Gr1 Winner To Tasmanian Stud
Meanwhile, Tasmania's Grenville Stud has announced the acquisition of My Lad (Southern Halo-Mystique, by Logical). Due principally to the success of Vinery's young Southern Halo stallion More Than Ready, about whom the 'Book Full' sign has long been posted, sons of Southern Halo are in high demand. One of 47 individual Gr1 winners by Southern Halo (Halo-Northern Sea, by Northern Dancer), the 1200 metres Gr1 sprint winner also joins Taimazov (Wattle Brae), Baerami Thoroughbreds' multiple Gr1 placed Star Cross, and Vinery's Dubleo as emerging sons of Southern Halo now available at stud. My Lad is a brother to Night of the Stars Sprint-Gr1 winner Matthis, and Mustard and Malaga - half-sisters to his dam Mystique - were both Champion 3YO Filly of Argentina. My Lad will stand for $4,400 inc GST. (Jul 11)
