In the sale ring yesterday, Mark & Shelley Treweek of Lyndhurst Farm paid top price of NZ$150,000 for a colt by Galileo (from Last Tycoon mare Liberty Song) at the inaugural stand-alone NZ Bloodstock National Weanling Sale at Karaka. Mark Treweek commented: "The colt was very well conformed & stood out as the best in the Sale. I think Galileo has a huge chance of success; he's already the leading 1st crop sire in Australia, after a great start in Europe also. We thought we would have to pay too much for a colt like this in Australia, so we are very happy to have secured him at this price to put him through the Premier Sale at Karaka next January." The colt was consigned by Waikato vendor Curraghmore Stud (which accounted for 6 of the top 12 lots) & Curraghmore principal Gordon Cunningham summed up: "We were happy with the quality of our draft leading into this Sale & are thrilled the format proved to be a success & did justice to those horses. I have always felt the weanling market has the potential to become a much stronger trading vehicle for breeders in NZ & our results today endorse that." (May 8)

Karaka Day-2: NZ$360,000 Encosta De Lago Filly
BBA Ireland bloodstock agent Adrian Nicol (buying on behalf of Englishman Bill Gredley) paid NZ$360,000 for an Encosta de Lago filly (out of Barathea mare Baroness Brtitney) consigned by Lyndhurst Farm. Nicoll (who said a trainer is still to be decided between top Victorian conditioners David Hayes & Lee Freedman) told thoroughbrednews.co.nz: "She is by a very good stallion & she is a good walker." Gredley (a friend of Coolmore supremo John Magnier) owns Stetchworth Stud at Newmarket in England, where he keeps up to 40 broodmares; he has had his stud for over 30 years & his success on the track includes Gr1 English Oaks winner User Friendly. Gredley explained that while visiting Australia last week he inspected Encosta de Lago at Coolmore's NSW Hunter Valley base; he "liked what he saw" & said the filly was the 1st of what may be more bloodstock he will race in Australia: "He (Encosta de Lago) was a real sire & everything you like in one. And she was a nice filly. We have had a lot of luck with Sadler's Wells (referring to Encosta de Lago's sire Fairy King, a full brother to Coolmore sire Sadler's Wells). (Feb 1)

Shysu (ridden by Stathi Katsidis for trainer Rex Lipp) defeated 4YO mares Love And Money (Secret Savings-Cherished) & Happier (Octagonal-Whistles). Shysu now has 6 wins & 8 placings in 16 starts for $223,150 prize-money. (Dec 5)
