Van Nistelrooy Not Returning To NZ In 2008
In New Zealamd, Trelawney Stud announced Coolmore's former Trelawney shuttler Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat-Halory, by Halo) will not be returning to NZ for the 2008 season". Trelawney's Brent Taylor explained: "We have been working very hard to secure the services of Van Nistelrooy once again for the NZ industry. We have always had 1st option to bring the horse back to NZ after resting him from shuttle duties in 2007. However the terms of the new lease agreement outlined to us have meant economics have come into play. To bring Van Nistelrooy to NZ, we would have to stand him at a fee that we believe the market would not be able to tolerate & it is with this in mind that we have had to forgo the opportunity to stand him." Van Nistelrooy retired to stud in 2003 & stood his 1st season at Trelawney Stud on behalf of a partnership including Chequers Stud, Curraghmore Stud, Fairdale Stud, Haunui Farm, Pencarrow Stud & Trelawney; he covered 116 mares in his initial season & sired 84 live foals. To date, he has produced 51 starters for 31 individual winners (including Singapore's Champion Juvenile Onceuponatime, dual Australian stakes-performer Pit Lane & fellow stakes-performers Boundless, Vandalo & Vanny Fair). His leading performer to date is Hellvelyn, winner of the Gr2 Royal Ascot Coventry Stakes last year, & also runner-up in the Gr2 Curragh Phoenix Stakes. Ferneley was runner-up in the Gr3 Leopardstown Ballysax Stakes, and 3rd in both the Gr3 Curragh Futurity Stakes and Gr3 Newmarket Somerville Stakes. Ishiguru made a superb start to the 2007 yearling sales in New Zealand, averaging 9 times his service fee and selling for up to NZ$110,000. Chequers Stud will be limiting the number of outside mares visiting Ishiguru (USA) this year to 70. Standing alongside Ishiguru (USA) at Chequers Stud is Deputy Governor, sire of Master Willie, and who will stand again this year at a fee of NZ$5,000 plus GST. (Jul 4)

Van Nistelrooy Not Shuttling In 2007
As the Australasian breeding season approaches, Trelawney Stud announced freshman sire & 2006 US shuttler Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat-Halory, by Halo) will not return to New Zealand for the 2007 breeding season. Van Nistelrooy shuttled from Coolmore's Ashford Stud in the US for 4 southern hemisphere seasons & Trelawney's Brent Taylor explained: "We still have enormous faith in the horse. However we & our partners thought that, for this season, we will take the opportunity to sit back & see how his progeny perform over the next 12 months. We have obviously been in consultation with Coolmore & they were happy to support this decision & we have every opportunity to bring Van Nistelrooy back to NZ in the future." Van Nistelrooy was brought to NZ by a partnership including Chequers Stud, Curraghmore Stud, Fairdale Stud, Haunui Farm, Pencarrow Stud & Trelawney; as a result, he covered some of the best mares in the NZ studbook including: Gr1 Melbourne Cup & Gr1 Caulfield Cup winner Ethereal; La Suffragette (dam of Gr1 Caulfield Cup winner Railings; Coogee Walk (dam of Activation); multiple Gr1-winner Fayreform; Gr2-winner Gordon's; Jazzmatazz (dam of Jazzella); & Midnight Babe (dam of Perlin). And Taylor noted: "His 1st crop yearlings sold very well at the sales last year & as a result have ended up in some of the best stables in NZ & Australia." From this crop, Van Nistelrooy has already produced a winner & 3 place-getters in NZ (from 8 starters), plus place-getters in Australia & Singapore. Taylor summed up: "He has had a total of 14 starters from his 1st crop in NZ, Australia, Japan & Singapore & he has had a good number of trials-performers of late. The feedback from trainers has been very positive all along. They are strong, athletic horses, that move well, have great temperaments & I'm sure we will see them doing the job over the next 12 months; & with that being the case, we expect to be bringing him back next season." Star Sprinter Iffraaj Joins 2007 NZ Haunui Roster
New Zealand's Haunui Farm announced 6YO Darley sire & "world-class international sprinter Iffraaj (Zafonic-Pastorale, by Nureyev)" will be joining its stallion roster for the 2007 breeding season". Darley retired the home-bred Godolphin sprinter to Kildangan Stud in Ireland with a €12,000 (A$19,200) initial service fee last October, following impressive victories in both September's UK Gr2 Park Stakes (7 furlongs) at York (setting a new course record of 1min 21.98sec) & August's UK Gr2 Lennox Stakes (7 furlongs) at Goodwood, as well as runner-up in the UK Gr1 July Cup (6 furlongs) at Newmarket. Overall Iffraaj notched 7 wins from 13 starts (also including the 2005 UK Gr2 Park Stakes at Doncaster) & retired with a Timeform rating of 127 & International Classification of 128 (ranking him the best horse in Europe at distances under 8 furlongs). His ill-fated sire & former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Zafonic (Gone West-Zaizafon, by The Minstrel) was US Champion 2YO & 3YO who was subsequently crowned 1997 leading 1st season sire, who boasts 64% winners-to-starters & 8.5% stakes-winners-to-foals. And his dam Pastorale is a half-sister to fellow Kildangan stallion Cape Cross. Haunui's Mark Chitty commented: "It's no secret we have been on the look-out for a new stallion to join our roster for quite some time. And the more we found out about Iffraaj, the harder it was to find any other horse that matched his credentials. He scored a tick in every box of our stallion selection criteria, just like Soviet Star & Almutawakel did, & when we compared him to other horses that were available, there was just no contest." Iffraaj is currently serving his 1st book of 150 mares at Kildangan Stud & is being brought to NZ by a partnership which also includes Gerald & Rex Fell's Fairdale Stud, Brent & Cherry Taylor's Trelawney Stud, Jim & Chris Campin of Chequers Stud, & Richard & David Moore of Soliloquy Lodge. He will stand at Haunui for NZ$12,000+GST & be limited to 120 mares. (May 1)

Van Nistelrooy Returning To NZ Trelawney
Trelawney Stud (in conjunction with partners Chequers Stud, Curraghmore Stud, Fairdale Stud, Haunui Farm & Pencarrow Stud) announced US stallion Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat-Halory, by Halo) is returning to NZ for his 4th southern hemisphere season & will stand the 2006 season at Trelawney for NZ$10,000+GST. Van Nistelrooy (a US$6.4 million yearling) was a Gr2 winner & Gr1-placed as a 2YO; this year 6 yearlings from his 1st southern hemisphere crop sold above NZ$100,000 at the NZ Bloodstock Karaka Sale series (plus averaging over NZ$74,000 during the Premier Sale section & emerging as leading 1st season sire with a NZ$45,000 average during the Select Sale). And in Australia, 5 Van Nistelrooy yearlings sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast & Inglis Easter sales averaged just under A$175,000. Trelawney's Brent Taylor commented:  "We were very pleased with the way the market received the Van Nistelrooy yearlings throughout the major sales this year & were buoyed by the people who purchased his yearlings. We are also well aware of the recent success of the Storm Cat sire line in NZ through Black Minnaloushe & his dual Gr1-winner Jokers Wild. With the type of horse Van Nistelrooy has left & the early reports from breakers, we are looking forward to turning the talk into results in the coming season." Van Nistelrooy is currently serving his 3rd season at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky; he is a half-brother to 4 stakes-winners & 2-stakes performers including Brushed Halory (by Broad Brush) whose 2YO colt by Storm Cat fetched US$2.2 million at this year's Fasig Tipton Auction & is now part of Sheik Mohammed's racing team. Doncaster Day-3: $260,000 Ishiguru Colt
Trainer Bryan Smart (buying for Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum) out-bid Simon Callaghan (son of trainer Neville Callaghan) & paid the Day-3 top price of 100,000 guineas (A$260,000) for a colt by 1st season sire Ishiguru (out of Cumbrian Melody, a winning daughter of Petong & producer of 6 winners including Listed-placed Golden Bounty) at the Doncaster St Leger Yearling Sale, reported racingpost.co.uk. The colt had previously been purchased by Mags O'Toole for Eddie O'Leary's Lynn Lodge Stud for just 32,000 guineas (A$83,000) as a foal in December. Smart summed up: "I fell in love with the horse, he was gorgeous & a great mover. And I am very grateful to Sheikh Rashid for backing me & allowing me to buy some nice horses this week."
