Magic Millions Day-3: $620k Encosta De Lago Colt
Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse (bidding on behalf of a group of owners that raced 2008 Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Sebring) paid the Day-3 top price of $620,000 for a colt by Coolmore-based stallion & Australian Champion Sire of the last 2 seasons Encosta de Lago (the 2nd foal out of unraced 7YO Fusaichi Pegasus mare River Song) consigned by Coolmore as agent. Waterhouse declared: “He's one of the most attractive horses in the sale. I thought he was just lovely. I actually wrote in my catalogue 'sexy'! The main group (for the horse) the Henderson boys, had said to me: identify a few colts at the sale that we should be investing in. He was one of them. He looks great value. There's no doubt a few years ago he would have made a lot more. It's a great time to be buying horses, especially as the prize-money keeps going up.” The colt’s dam River Song is a half-sister to Gr3-winner Murjana. And the colt’s 2nd dam Twyla (whose 5 foals to race are all winners) is a 3/4-sister to multiple Gr1-winning sire Redoute’s Choice, Gr1-winning sire Al Maher & Gr1-winner Platinum Scissors, as well as a half-sister to dual Gr1-winning sire Hurricane Sky, Gr1-winning sire Umatilla, dual winner Show Dancing (dam of Gr3-winner Salameh) & Shantha’s Choice (dam of Gr1-winner Manhattan Rain & Gr3-winner Sliding Cube).

Owner Replaces Trainer For Gr1-Winner Tears I Cry
Owner Anne McGrath (who previously prepared her own horses) has taken over the training of Gr1-winning 6YO gelding Tears I Cry (Lacryma Cristi-Cassazione, by Salieri) from Ciaron Maher, who prepared him to win last season's Gr1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in one of the year's biggest upsets at odds of 100-1. Most recently Tears I Cry (home-bred by McGrath, whose father Leo Dwyer purchased the gelding's dam Cassazione for just $4,000 at the 1998 June Sale) finished 3rd in a 3-way photo-finish to the Gr2 Dato'Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 13, before running 10th in last weekend's Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield; last season he also placed in the Gr2 Jayco Crystal Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley.

3 Deauville Yearlings To Aust Buyers Maher & Ryan
In France, Australian buyers Peter Maher & Gerry Ryan purchased 3 yearlings (under the Broadhurst Agency banner) during this week's 4-day Arqana Sale at Deauville: a Red Ransom colt for €210,000 (A$357,000); a Captain Rio filly for €150,000 (A$255,000); & a Montjeu filly for €130,000 (A$221,000). Australian bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy (Arqana's Australasian representative) commented: "The pair were reinvesting after tasting success with 2YO colt Café Racer, who they purchased for €90,000 (A$153,000) at the same sale last year. By Royal Applause & trained by Andre Fabre, Café Racer has had 3 starts for a 2nd on debut, then 2 wins & goes to a Group race at his next start. Both owners were in attendance for his last win & by all accounts it was the thrill of a life time!"
