Lindsay Park Stud Remains In South Aust
Following news yesterday that David Hayes has decided to sell another significant portion of his famous horse property in the Barossa Valley, Sam Hayes confirmed last night that Lindsay Park Stud is remaining in South Australia. The stud business currently operates on approximately 650 acres which is being retained by the Hayes family. After re-establishing the stud business in 2005, Sam Hayes & business partner Darren Thomas purchased the remainder of the breeding business from David Hayes in 2008. Sam confirmed: "The racing stable & the stud share a lot of history, as well as the Lindsay Park name; however we operate very different businesses. David trains horses & we breed them. We respect David's decision & we have enjoyed operating from adjoining properties; however this move does not directly affect the stud or our plans. Being based in South Australia is an integral part of what we are passionate about. We believe we can stand top quality stallions in South Australia, stallions that will attract some of the best mares from right across the country. Naturally we will be following the sale process with a great deal of interest, as there could be a lot of synergy established with the right buyer." There are currently 7 stallions on the Lindsay Park Stud roster & they are expecting to attract over 450 mares to their Barossa Valley base in 2010.

Touchstone Comments On 2010 Sire Lineup
Following the announcement of its 2010 stallion fees, Touchstone Farm nominations manager Marco Peirluigi commented: "We are extremely happy with our 2010 lineup of stallions. We have worked hard to present breeders with a range of stallions which cater for all breeders whether they are breeding to race or looking to breed a commercial prospect. All of the stallions are top racehorses with strong pedigrees and we think they tick all the boxes. Danasinga is a great addition to the lineup and is already proving popular with breeders here in Western Australia. Being a proven Gr1-producing sire who has sired winners all around Australia he is a safe choice for breeders. We are also proud to be standing first season sire Shrewd Rhythm in conjunction with major partners Lindsay Park Stud & . Our young sires are also off to a great start with Flying Pegasus's first crop sale yearlings averaging close to $35,000, and Vital Equine who currently has some good looking first crop weanlings".

Stem Cell Storage Linked To Yearling Sale Values
Meanwhile the stem cell storage revolution continues to gain momentum. Senior scientist Rick Tocchetti & his team at Adelaide's Institute of Medical & Veterinary Science face a busy morning, with stem cell umbilical cord samples due to arrive for processing for Vet Biotechnology's stem cell storage service Stembank from champion racemare Private Steer & multiple Gr1-winner Racing To Win's dam Surrealist (who have foaled at Coolmore Stud), New York Style (who foaled at Chatsworth Park) & Irish mare Siberie (who foaled at Lindsay Park Stud). And later in the week stem cell banking samples are also expected from the foalings of Gr1-winner Mon Mekki (in-foal to Elusive Quality), Kournerov (in-foal to Barely A Moment), Gift Bouquet (in-foal to Lonhro), Prawn Cocktail (in-foal to Encosta De Lago) & Royal Mask (in-foal to Hussonet). However Vet Biotechnology general manager David Bridgland noted: "While these are some of the most valuable foals to be born in Australia this year, the majority of support for Stembank has come from the middle market. In addition to the now well-documented therapeutic benefits of stem cell procedures, canny breeders are unlocking the marketing benefits of stem cell storage to underpin values at the yearling sales. The prospect of a future breakdown turning a valuable racehorse into a $500 hack can now be a thing of the past."

His full-brother & NSW Hunter Valley-based Yarraman Park sire Catbird (a 5-time winner as a 2YO & $1.75 million-earner) boasts 183 winners (in Australia, NZ, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau & Korea) including 24 stakes-performers headed by Gr1 Derby winner Cats Fun, plus Group-winners Diego Garcia, Collate & Cateclipse; Catbird is also the sire of the top Lindsay Park filly Catechuchu & last season's stakes-winning 2YO Harb (who scored an impressive win in Hong Kong this week). Longhorn is also a full-brother to Victorian-based Eliza Park stallion Danbird (whose 6 wins included 3 stakes headed by the Gr2 Pago Pago) & Craiglea's Stan Johnston enthused: "Longhorn is a strapping young sire who looks ideally suited in Queensland. He would offer Queensland's finest black-type pedigree at an affordable price."

Former Trainer Gask Joins Vet Biotechnology
Equine health care company Vet Biotechnology has appointed former South Australian racehorse trainer Jeremy Gask as project manager. Gask (who finished 4th in the Adelaide trainers' premiership last year) stopped training in December after previously having stables at Goolwa & Strathalbyn. He commented: "The opportunity to join a team developing wonderful veterinary technologies, in particular the stem cell therapies proving to be the most effective tendon & ligament rehabilitation tools ever seen, is one not to be missed." Vet Biotechnologies general manager David Bridgland added: "Jeremy joins at an exciting time in the company's development, with the imminent commercial launch of the Equine Umbilical Cord Service following successful validation of the technology in conjunction with leading studs Arrowfield, Widden, Coolmore, Lindsay Park, Eliza Park, Swettenham & Eureka in 2006."

Alannan 2YOs Highlight Value
It's been an exciting week for Lindsay Park-based freshman sire Alannan (Conquistador Cielo-Dame Sybil, by Elocutionist). He followed his initial 2 winners (Aquifer in October & & Fitofancy in December) with an impressive debut runner-up by daughter Swirly Dream (Alannan-Jon's Pleasure, by Jon George) in the $400,000 Classic (1200m) at Morphettville in Adelaide; Swirly Dream (a half-sister to Gr1-winner Padstow) had been a $22,000 yearling at the 2006 Adelaide Magic Millions sale. Meanwhile demand for his 2007 yearlings at last week's Adelaide Magic Millions Sale saw them sell up to $43,000. Alannan (a multiple Gr2 winner & Gr1-placed sprinter in the US, who smashed Distorted Humor's 7 furlongs track record at Churchill Downs & was rated the 2nd highest-weighted sprinter world-wide for the colts of 1996) will stand at Lindsay Park Stud in 2007 for $8,250.

Econsul Foundation Sire At Wadham Park Vic
Gr1 Caulfield Guineas-winning 5YO stallion Econsul (Pins-Gypsy Soul, by Centaine) will be a foundation stallion this spring for Wadham Park's Victoria breeding division at Peter Rowsthorn's Tylden-based Woodside Park, reported The Australian newspaper. Econsul (raced by a syndicate headed by Lindsay Park Stud) was a NZ$65,000 yearling at the 2003 NZ Bloodstock Select Colts Sale at Karaka. He recorded 3 wins (including the 2004 Gr1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m as a 3YO & Listed Widden Stakes over 1100m as a 2YO) & 4 placings (including the 2005 Gr1 Cadbury Australian Guineas over 1600m & Gr3 Skyline Stakes over 1200m) from 28 starts for $884,600 prize-money. Econsul's 5-time-winning dam Gypsy Soul was Gr1-placed & his multiple Melbourne-winning 2nd dam Sky Rugger is a half sister to Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Beechcraft. "There is a chance Econsul will be joined at Woodside Park this spring by 2004 Gr1 Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow (Daylami-Style Of Life, by The Minstrel)," noted breednet.com.au.

Magic Millions Day 2: $900k Stravinsky Colt
Melbourne bloodstock agent Mark Pilkington (buying agent for David Hayes's Lindsay Park stable) out-bid expatriate New Zealander Rob McAnulty & paid $900,000 for a full brother to the recently retired 2006 Australian Champion filly Serenade Rose. The colt by Coolmore shuttler Stravinsky is the 5th foal out of Sadler's Wells mare Rose Of Tralee (a 4-time winner from 1800-2800m) & was consigned by Sir Patrick Hogan's NZ Cambridge Stud. Pilkington commented: "A really lovely colt. He's well bred with an international pedigree. On the international scale I don't think he was too expensive either. He's a horse who hopefully could win a race like the Gr1 Sires' Produce (as a 2YO) & be a real stallion prospect. He should make into a lovely racehorse." Serenade Rose won 8 races (including the Gr1 VRC Oaks, Gr1 AJC Oaks, Gr1 Stakes, Gr2 Wakeful Stakes, Gr2 Edward Manifold Stakes & Gr2 Angus Armanasco Stakes, plus 2 Gr1-placings) for $1,773,635 prize-money.

Lan Kwai Fong Filly At Keeneland
The 1st foal from former top class Australian racemare Lan Kwai Fong (Bluebird-Veronical, by Fappiano) will be offered at the upcoming Keeneland September Yearling Sale (September 12-26) at Lexington in Kentucky. The filly (by leading sire Pulpit) will be offered as Lot 923 during the 3rd session (on Wednesday September 14) & Keeneland's Australasian representative Vic Cox commented: "She's the sort of filly that should have strong appeal to our local breeders, being from such a good Australian racemare & by a proven sire in Pulpit, who is free of the Danzig blood which has become so prevalent in this country." Lan Kwai Fong was originally purchased by Ron Dufficy for $110,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale & competed successfully from Lindsay Park (with highlights including victory in the Gr3 VRC The Vanity & a long-neck 2nd in the Gr1 Victoria Oaks). Cox noted: "She has a lovely international pedigree, featuring champion US sire Broad Brush, so it always made economic sense to send her back to the US." Lan Kwai Fong sold for US$450,000 at the 2003 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale to Kentucky-based Forging Oaks Farm. Cox summed up: "Breeding for the global market is the way of the future. Just look at what 's John Messara is doing with Alinghi, who is campaigning in North America right now. If you don't have an internationally recognised pedigree, then international race performance is the only other way in which you can move upwards into that next elite level of commercial thoroughbred breeding."
